I am a new member here and decided I would share this afternoons excitement with all of you. I have a flock of mixed OEGB, a frizzle and a cochin totaling 12 free ranging birds. I also have 38 rhode island reds, barred rocks, production reds, mille fluer, and golden seabrights which are all about 8 weeks old, all in the coop for now.
Anyways, I was in the kitchen washing dishes when I heard the OEGB's cackling outside. I grabbed my 12 gauge and stepped out on the porch of my cabin. I looked for a couple of minutes and saw nothing but a few of my birds were in the trees around back. Just as I started to come into the house, this fox comes charging in at my flock! He managed to scatter them everywhere and locked in on one of my hens coming towards an opening. I chose my spot and a magnum load of #4's ended his would be killing spree! Thank god I was home because I am usually not. I would have come back to a massacre, I am sure of that! I have raised chickens all of my life and have yet to be around before something bad happened to my chickens. I am in the process of building my new flock and this would have been a bad way to start off!

Way to go! Congrats! We just lost 8 a few nights ago and still aren't sure if it was a Raccoon or Fox (or something else.) No signs of it returning yet- but we've got our .22 ready and 2 traps set each night....I do not want it to return but if it does I hope we're hear and able to get it!

Nope, no babies, it was a young male. I cannot believe he made his move so early in the day! I have been trying to post a picture but, I cannot seem to figure out how to get it on here. Though, I am sure you have all seen a fox before! LOL The one strange thing about this one was that it had one white lower leg, whereas most of them have black or dark brown lower legs. An interesting genetic anomaly I guess.
