The Aloha Chicken Project

Pics
So, here are some pictures of some of the littles...

this is I think one of the more impressive looking ones... bet it loses those spots though. :(

Here is another little spotted cutie.

Here is a group shot.

On the bottom left you can see a fairly typical looking chick at this point.

Thanks for the chick pics!

The spotted ones by Cheeto, they didn't really start to show the WHITE WHITE until they were about three weeks old. Funny that you ended up with mostly Buff chicks, as I have a lot of stripey Chipmunk "Sussex" type guys. It was just the random hatch timing! I didn't purposely send you all the yellows and hoard the chipmunkers, I swear! LOL!

Oooh, some of yours look big . . .

And a note on the crazies? This is weird, since I've introduced the Sussex and Buff Rock, the new chicks are crazy-active as ever, but they are also SUPER friendly! Like Cheeto's babies on the pictures? They bounce all around, but they also bounce right into my hands, or perch on my shoulder.

The older chicks - the ones about four months old now - still let me pick them up and cuddle them! This is 100% different from the previous generation of Alohas. So the new crosses are very alert and active, but way more tame and accepting of being handled. It is so cute to have a half Aloha, half Sussex roo literally run to me for a treat and then I hug him.

Oh, and none of my chicks here (from your same batch) have started to show the WHITE feathers yet. I'll post pics on here the second I see anything show up on mine!

Aloha from Los Angeles! The first chick is out....sort of.

Had an early pipper (day 19) that died. I saw no progress in it's shell chipping so pulled it out and it was dead. Wish I had pulled it earlier. Then discovered a second early pipper (day 20). Came home tonight to find no progress with Day-20 chick so pulled it and heard no peeping so I opened up the egg for a necropsy. The chick was still breathing but the membrane was completely dried and hard. It was stuck. I moistened the membrane and pulled the chick out. It looks like the chick had absorbed the blood and yolk and had actually pooped inside the egg. I think it was poop. I've never seen any thing like that left inside an egg before.

The little guy is still weak and and not peeping at all. Legs are kicking though. Here's hoping he/she will be the first Aloha in Southern CA.

Tomorrow is officially day 21, so hopefully I'll come home to several more.

(humidity is between 70-80% BTW and temps in the hatcher bater have been 97-100F)

runswscissors - I did spot two chicks with pure white tails in my group! One of them is a light brown "chipmunker" and the other one is buff. But I'm still waiting to see the pure white feathers pop up on other chicks. They usually start down the spine, and then some white feathers show up on the chest. Sometimes a few white feathers show up on the wing early on.

16 went into lockdown.

all my notes are here https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/los-angeles-aloha-chickens-project

Day-20 chick was really crusty this morning. I gave it a bath in some warm water, cleaned its butt and help spread it's toes which are starting to curl up.

I may well give up mailed eggs after this. I bought Swedish eggs earlier. 10 arrived good, 5 went into lockdown, 3 hatched. 2 of the hatchlings hatched on day 22 and 23. They never got on their feet. I tried the ortho chair, leg and feet braces suggested on the forums, and even did physical therapy walking them around in a sling. After a week I decided to euthanize them. So from the 10 Swedish eggs, I have one healthy chick. Let's hope the Alohas turn out better.

No one else had pipped as of this morning. I didn't hear any peeping either.

Hmm, very much the reason that I gave up on sending eggs. and looked into shipping live chicks. My own luck hatching shipped eggs has been very poor.

Ruri, do note that I have the 'bators restocked right now, and I may be able to do a live shipment to you on March 26th. I'll have to do a final candling, but there should be plenty that hatch within a 24 hour period. I have 82 spaces filled now.

Normally I've been insisting on "Express" mail (because the previous shipments have been to Oregon - really far away from Phoenix!) but since you're only a six hour drive from here, I think Priority would work fine. Let's see how the hatch goes! If it doesn't work we can try a live shipment.

Both live shipments so far have been a total success!
