The Aloha Chicken Project

Deerfield no this is the first hatch I've had any like this. I really needed a rooster like this and it looks like one is going to be a awesome size. I wish I had something to put in pics for size comparison but I don't have any bantam size birds. I know my alohas are all bigger than my ameraucanas. I'm working hard to keep this project progressing. I so enjoy these birds. My main rooster and eight hens have the sweetest disposition. Excellent foragers when I'm able to let them out.

Wow! You've made a ton of progress! I wish I could see them in person, one of these days. That's just fantastic. I am so excited for you and us, since we all benefit from what the others accomplish!

These birds are just so unique! When I google images of Swedish Flower, the SF's show up but so do our Alohas and I can tell the difference between them easily. I don't think the general public would look at it that way, but there are some definite differences. I mean I know we have some SF influence but with Sommer's guidance we've sidestepped a lot of the grey hens and, of course, they don't have crests. The Alohas look like their own kind of bird from my perspective. I'm really looking forward to how the next year goes for everybody. You've done a great job having your own "look" to the flock. I just love it.

I am caponizing today, a very decidedly difficult job, but in between I am spending time with my brooder birdies just watching them and observing their differences and similarities. Of course, I have some Buff, Speckled and Light Sussex birds in there with them and then all the crosses. It's intriguing to see the neck feathers coming in now, due to the Buff influence. I only have a very few Aloha cross Buffs but it's enough to keep me interested.

I think the Speckled influence really helps with temperament. The Buff/Speckled cross is an amazing "people" bird.

The eggs have arrived! The corner of the box was dented and 4 eggs were broken this time but no stabbings to report. Must have drop kicked it this time. Eggs went straight in the 'bator but won't turn the turner on till tomorrow evening. We'll see how that goes.

I do not understand your shipping failures? I just shipped thirty Bettas from Sandia Park New Mexico (87045) to Harrison Arkansas priority USPS three day delivery; each Betta was in a bag with four ounces of water. The package arrived fine no damage, all fish arrived alive. The shipping box was 14X18X10, lined with one inch Styrofoam and foam pellets top and bottom. I hope everyone understands, all mail and packages are transported by FedEx not the USPS.

I'm not sure how to interpret your message, so I'm asking for more information. These are some of the things that have run through my mind as I struggle to understand your perspective:

Are you saying FedEx/USPS failed when, out of 42 eggs, 38 arrived? I wouldn't exactly classify that as a failure on their part. It's not perfect, but it's more eggs than I had to start with for certain and I am very, very pleased with them.

Or, that Sommer doesn't pack the eggs correctly? I don't see how you could pack sufficiently to guard against stabbings or whole dented corners.

Or, Are you saying, it didn't happen? I don't know what kind of weird motive I must have for reporting damage that didn't occur.

Or, Are you saying, I believe that USPS is the root of all evil and FedEx is blameless, in my perspective?

Or, Are you saying, simply, that it's a mild puzzle to you because you've had such "success" with no damage whatsoever?

Let me say up front, that whatever it is that bothered you, I recognize this as my failure to communicate well and I want to understand so that I can address it and not repeat the mistake.

From my perspective, it is mildly puzzling how these things happen to a box marked fragile, yet I get a plethora of non fragile things with no damage whatsoever. I'm not making an assumption about the whole working force of FedEx or USPS. I made a joke about a fictional person that was not meant seriously. So perhaps I should cut the twisted joking because I can see if you work at these places and are consciously being as careful as you can be, you may feel hurt that I classify all FedEx/USPS workers as all the same and from my careless jest, it certainly sounds as if I do, when I truly don't.

I am so sorry I managed to offend you, I sure didn't mean it that way. I was just trying to make light of the situation and was inconsiderate in the process. Perhaps we should report shipping damage in a PM. I will try to remember that in future. Of course, I'm old and can't remember a lot of things and I don't have eggs shipped but rarely, so don't hold me to that one.

I think you were right to mention how rough your package arrived, Deerfield. One of my packages arrived with a corner caved in and one egg broken. The other looked great, but many of the air cells were detatched and rolling.

There are many threads on BYC about the perils of hatching shipped eggs.

On day 16, I have 10 left in the bator out of 29 set.

Thanks for the support FridayYet, but I work to be more kind than right, even though I'm not really that great at it. I am painfully aware that I am more logical than emotional sometimes and that tends to hurt others when I would truly cut off my right hand, rather than hurt someone intentionally. I have been told from a reliable source that I am sometimes painfully direct, too sarcastic when I think I am just being funny. In short, I suspect I am obnoxious.

You were so brave to check the air cells. I couldn't bear to check them. I will candle on day 10 though, just to make sure I don't have any rotters. Yuck! Been there, done that.

And I should apologize for posting here in the sense that I follow this thread because I love to see how projects progress, but I don't have any Aloha chickens.

If any hatch, they will be in the Orloff thread and/or Marans thread!

Good luck to you, and to all working on your beautiful Aloha chickens!

Not a problem -- all lurking and posting approved! It gets a little slow around here.

I still want to see your shipped egg hatchlings, so give me a heads up by PM. Would like very much to congratulate you!
