The Aloha Chicken Project

Pics
More babies! We have a total of 38 total with more pipping and zipping as I type.

Tracy -- I thought I heard one of the babes whistling that tune!

Look at the range of color on these guys! Yes, we have chipmunks but these chipmunks have lots of variety in shading and color. I love the bright yellow! I think it's interesting that a couple of them only have a stripe on their heads, one distint and one indistinct.

They're sleeping but then they jump up and are very bouncy, even though still clumsy. They are so adorable!

First born chick has been dubbed "Faster" because he was, of course. But he continues to live up to his name by waiting until there's a group of peacefully sleeping chicks. Then he takes an incredibly fast dash over the top of the sleepers and they all start up while he looks on with a smug look on his beak. (Okay, maybe I'm exagerrating about the smug look.

) I saw him do it 2 times while I was watching. I think he's a mess!

There's Faster in front, waiting till they all get good and settled before making another "rouse the troops" dash! Faster has been very good to show them where the food and water is though, so while he's having fun at their expense he's also being a very good birdie. I love these little guys.

I'll update you this evening.

Taz must be really busy -- hope she checks in soon, I'm dying to see pics of her troop! Hope everything is okay there, Tonya.

Edited for spelling.

Whoo-hoo! 38 and counting! Now, THAT is more like it!

Even 11 live chicks would have been enough to start a program, had not another egg hatched. But 38 chicks? That already means you've got enough to pick and choose some good ones. Yippeeee!!

The most I've ever mailed is 30 at one time, so now you "officially" have the most Alohas outside of AZ in one flock.

This is so exciting!

I know what you mean about the chipmunk chicks! I have the same thing here! Some are like "red chipmunks" with lots of rusty fluff, others are kind of "golden chipmunks" and a few are this softer, gentler brown color, like "caramel chipmunks". I am guessing those are all variations of the Sussex crosses, but I have no idea what they will look like as adults.

I need to take a photo of one of my chicks that is now four weeks old. It's a strange one, at this point something new to me. Kind of like a Sussex, big chick with a very white chest. But kind of golden yellow on top where the brown would be on a Sussex? Zero idea what it will look like as an adult. I just keep waiting and it changes every day! LOL!

Wow! I didn't realize I had the largest flock outside of AZ -- that's very cool! Of course, I'm counting on Taz to out-do me -- can you imagine? If I get 50 total, I will be extremely, extremely pleased! With her birds and mine, we're going to have a lovely group to breed from.

Sommer, I'd really like to see a pic of the bird you're describing. Some of my birds have this bright lemony verging on mustard coloring that's really interesting.

Awesome! Almost to 50!

I did have a couple of late babies last time, so it's not out of the question. One came out SUPER late, I was getting ready to toss the unhatched eggs when he finally popped! (I gave it another 8 hours after that one, and nothing else happened but whew, that was close!)

We're at 50 this morning! Yay! We're going to listen to the eggs with a stethoscope late this afternoon before we give up on any of them. But I am very, very happy with 50!

I meant to have my existing flock culled before the babies hatched but then I messed up my ankle. It's finally bearing a tiny bit of weight so I'm thinking by the end of the week I will be able to deliver my culled birds to their new owners. Today, we will be moving the Alohas from the cardboard box and putting them under the light box in my temporary brooder in my craft room. That will be a good place for them until I get the others moved to the new coop. The new coop is done except for putting up the PermaNet electric poultry fencing. Today, DB and DSIL are coming over to help us and just to hang out. They've been very interested in my chicken venture, unlike the rest of my family, and love the chicks. They were here Friday evening to see the new babies. It's great to have their support.

I don't have any new pics now but will after we get them settled into their new brooder. We're cleaning out all of the old bedding and disinfecting everything before they go in. All the chicks are doing great! Woo Hoo!
