The Ameraucana Thread: Where everything and anything about the breed can be discussed (APA, Non-Stan

How can you tell that they are not Americaunas? I don't mind either way because I was just hoping for multi-colored eggs, but I'd love to know the difference. It would be a relief if they are in fact pullets since I'm pretty sure one of my Barred Plymouth Rocks is a roo.
The easiest way for me to differentiate between true Ameraucanas and non-standard or EE's was to look at the pictures on the Ameraucana Breeders Club website. They have pictures of birds representing all 8 approved colors. (Some colors that haven't been approved yet are splash, lavender, and barred, but breeders are working on them). Even if they aren't true Ameraucanas you still should have a colorful egg basket. Most hatchery bred Ameraucanas still lay blue green eggs. I have heard the gene for pea combs in linked to the blue egg gene. If yours have pea combs you should have a good chance of getting some pretty eggs.

Did you buy sexed pullets? If you did the Barred Rock should be a female as those can be sexed as day old chicks. Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers are very difficult to sex at a young age. Here is another BYC thread you should check out that has lots of pictures to look at.

Sounds like a dominate white/black cross.
We had a dominant white columbian over black sex-link hens that produced lots of chicks with this coloring, plus traditional columbian markings. I'd say 80% of the hatch looked like that bird above. Made it easy to figure out the rooster was dominant white.

Just candled my Blue/black/splash eggs. It looks like out of 15 I have 12 that are developing, 1 that may be infertile, 1 that may be a blood ring (not too happy about that one the egg is the most beautiful blue!), and one that is too dark to see much of anything. Very happy with my results. One more week to go!
