The American Paint Silkie

first one is paint to paint, 2nd is paint to black (the first bird is one I bought, not one I bred, the others, are my breeding.
i see looks like paint to black is the definate way to go as for paint to white i heard the paints are amazing but you dont get many and the ones you do get are preety bad quaility and for paint to paint i have seen some nice birds but it seems to add the skin problems and the brown colour

I think more the problem with paint to paint is the doubling up of the tannish color, both birds probably carry it due to their backrounds. I've had some awesome white to paint but then I do get solid whites and am waiting for them to get spots or not, can take 6 months for spotting to show up.who wants to wait that long.

thanks for all the help its awsome to have this surpport also i agree i wouldnt want to wait 6 months ethier that would mean you would get to many birds to quick and wouldnt be able to unload so you agree that paint on black is deffinteey the way to go :)

Hoppy...what is up with light colored eyes? My black hen had them and passed them on to the chicks I just hatched (didn't realize she did have light eyes...until I noticed the chicks had them)...every egg hatched a paint chick from her and my paint roo

but with light eyes....

can they be breed out?

Also, I have my paint roo now with two of my best blue pullets...I am hoping to get blue paints

I have also put a beautiful paint pullet with my splash roo...do you think that is wise? I don't really want some crazy colored chicks...lol

I believe the light eyes can be bred out by selecting for dark eyes. I've not had this issue in my paints. i had it in a calico that I culled from my breeding program.
I have crossed splash with paint- i got khaki colored birds. this is paint over splash sizzle. this bird has no spots but you can see the color. I've only gotten this color when crossing paint to splash (3 different hens- same roo)
I also have blue paints.

Firstly, she is beautiful...love her color and she is a sizzle? Very cool...

Yes I have just sold that black pullet so took her out of my breeding program ( I laugh as I write that as I am just a backyard chickener) along with many others as I cut down my flock greatly and have kept only six pullets and two Roos... But I have two sets of eggs coming from some quality breeders...black, paint and splash...so I will just start again as I now have a better idea of who to pair up and what to look for...

But I am looking forward to seeing what that paint pullet and splash roo gives....are your blue paints from paint roo and blue pullets? I have just put my two blues with my paint roo so no eggs yet...think they a still settling in...

Thanks for your insight and experience...I would love to see some of your blue paints....I will take a pic of my chicks tomorrow...

she actually is a frizzled silkie, I have sizzles as well and sometimes I get one of these. the blue paints came from paint over splash in my case. the splash I used has won show champion (jrs) twice. figured this was the best way to bring in very good type and get the paint color. in pictures, you would not probably notice that the bird had blue spots, the color is not that different from the black. if I can get some of the blue next to a black paint you might be able to see it.
here is one of my sizzles. she is also khaki.

Yes very cool..is khaki a prelude to breeding in brown/chocolate?

Blue paint from paint-splash...interesting...I have a very nice splash pullet that won BV at my first show this year I might put her in with him...I am wondering if the paint over blue will give me anything worth keeping...BUT no one is laying and it is driving me crazy!

Blue Paint Rooster!

He is a beautiful boy... I could see how blue spots and black spots could be hard to tell from just faint black spots...let me get some shots of my chicks and tell me what you think...

Thanks again people...
