The American Paint Silkie

well if breeders deside they didnt want crest that large then judge would have no choise but put up smaller crests

No, if the judge feels the crests are too small, he/she can choose to not place the birds, or to place them low. I've been to plenty of shows where there was no BB and even ones with no class champion where birds in those breeds/classes were shown because the judge did not feel the birds merited a higher award.

I would not be happy to see us deliberately breed exhibition quality birds back into hatchery quality ones. I WOULD like the standard to be more specific in defining balance and crest proportion compared to body & tail. I would have no problem with requiring that birds be able to see, and that they should place above ones whose vision is blocked bu feathers.

I totally agree !!! My first silkie is what I call my generic silkie, bought from someone locally, no doubt started out as a hatchery silkie. Her personality is adorable and she is a character !!! She can see !!!! It does make a world of difference in their personality. I also feel that silkies can make good pets for children but NOT the huge crested ones especially for young children that don't yet realize that the are living creatures !!! The silkies don't stand a chance because they can't see. The ones that can see in my opinion are a better for pets.

I'm new to this thread... I used to have b/b/s silkies, but lost them in an icestorm a couple years back. I just got back into chickens and have been perusing this thread for a while (I have it subscribed). However, I do not buy hatching eggs because I don't have an incubator.

Does anyone sell paints around OK, or ship? I know this is the time of year that some people sell off stock, and it's finally cool enough here for shipping, but I also know this is a time that a lot of people do their incubating/hatching so there's a possibility of nothing being available and I'm ok with that (at least on the outside).

JMO but I think what Chickendales was trying to say if all the judges had to judge were birds with smaller crest they would all be judged fairly. But until there is a standard a bird with a smaller crest will place lower indeed. I don' think you would need to breed exhibition quality back to hatchery quality birds is necessary, but maybe somewhere inbetween. Whatever it would take to make a nice looking crest where the bird could still see and still look nice. JMO

Just to let you know Judy, my paint rooster is doing fine. I love him and hope he will soon love his hens. He is really getting pretty and I hope to bring him to the next show and let you see him. His name is Cash. Maybe he will have lots of baby paints for me. Thanks again Janie E .

Long time no post! Hi all!

So far, here is my favorite 2nd generation paint girl:

I have several cockerels (I think) that will be needing new homes soon! I would LOVE to maybe trade one for a NICE show quality white or black (OR PORCELAIN!) pullet or young hen. I would also be interested in doing a trade for another paint cockerel to mix up my gene pool. I can get pics tomorrow afternoon. PM me if interested!!
