My paint silkies are laying! I incubated my first two eggs and both hatched out adorable paint chicks today! I was surprised to find that even with the colder temps and short days, they are continuing to lay. I just put 11 more eggs in the incubator today!!
I'm actually going to have to list some eggs soon since I won't have anymore room to incubate them for a few weeks - that's a problem I didn't anticipate until maybe spring.
Oh well, I'm really happy!! Thought I'd share a pic of the new cuties born today:
I thought this picture was really cute too of the just born baby paint looking out at its 5 1/2 week old siblings.
Heads up to my fellow BYCers - Sadly, I have decided to let a paint silkie roo and and paint showgirl roo go since I have too many roosters. They are breeding. I'm only selling locally but if anyone here will be at the Eastern Iowa Poultry Show next weekend or travels to E. IA, send me a PM if interested. I also have a pet quality paint available for $10, not sure if pullet or cockerel.
I have a quick question for all you paint breeders. It doesn't so much pertain to silkies as to paints. I am trying to see if I understand how the gene works.
Paint shows up when you cross an "incomplete"? dominant white to black or dominant black? I am asking this just because I have 2 cornish cross hens that I grew out to get some eggs and hatch out a few babies to grow out. I only like to have like 10 meat birds at a time. So I have hatched all of their eggs and the last chick that hatched came out with a few black spots of fluff. I thought I was seeing things until the feathers started coming in and now there are some black feathers as well. I assume that this particular chicks dad is my black jersey giant roo who didn't get to breed often until my golden comet roo became fox food.
So if I understand correctly if he breeds that same hen again I will continue to get paint chicks? I love the color and to have it pop up on my property without even trying is funny.
I was wondering how many of you are getting paint babies that hatch out all white. I hatched out a few paints a couple months ago and at first was very dissapointed that they did not have spots. I thought they were going to turn out white. Now the spots are really coming in. It took about 2 maybe 3 weeks to start seeing spots and now I have one that is just gorgeouse with big patches of paint on it's back. I have another that just has a couple black feathers in the wing and one that i hatched out later that isn't showing spots yet, but lots of you seem to be getting chicks that are spotted when they come out and that was not the case with mine.
Also...... seems like I hatched out some red paints in the batch as well one has darker red on him and lots of it (rooster i think) and the other has like a lighter red almost buff to it (hen i think). Does anyone have pics of their red paints? is anyone even working on them? I plan to keep the pair and see what they produce, but was wondering what everyone elses red paints looked like.
