The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

Wow, what a great thread @nicalandia thank you for providing all this valuable info..

I have a question about my Black Copper Marans. I've gotten 2 separate hens that's thrown chicks with a copper head spot at hatch in my test matings this year.
I've read and been told by members here that this is a sign of purity in BCMs and that I should leg band and watch.
But I haven't been able to get any other info as in the genetics behind it, or the why.
Any info you could provide would be much appreciated.

For details my original 5 BCMs are hatchery birds. The rooster I'm test mating is over colored in the chest with 1 of the hens being all black (Betty) and the other is almost all black (Black) with just minimal copper in hopes to fix his progeny's coloring.
Another question also with this 1st hen that's all black (Betty) I'm seeing extremely mossy pullets.

Here's pics of both the head spot male from Betty and mossy pullets.
What's causing this?

I have no back history for parentage being hatchery stock.

This one of 2 hatched from Black yesterday. Bad photos I realize if you cant see the head spot I can get better ones. So I'm yet to find out what the genders are and if I'll see any mossiness appear.

Thank you once again for any insight.

What you are seeing is just a Variant of the Birchen allele,

What might be going on here? I'm sure she is from one of my Chamois Spitzhauben girls but unsure of the father. She has a weird off white pattern on her white background. It's hard to see even in-person let alone in the photos I've taken of her.

Are I/I^d birds on an extended black base "dun paint"?

I think Nicalandia (or maybe someone else?) indicated that yes this is the case at some point earlier in the thread. I don't have any personal experience with combining the alleles to confirm or deny that, though.

This is pretty typical of leaky heterozygous dominant white. It shows up a lot in Paint Silkies. From what I've read, it's essentially the gene not quite preventing the deposition of all black pigment in the plumage, so it has fine traces that look dingy brownish like this instead of pure white. Some speculate it's associated with the bird being s+ gold rather than S silver, so maybe that could help you narrow down the possible fathers?

Chamois Spitzhauben are gold based.

It almost has a ghostly duckwing pattern, with the shafting and stippling, very interesting

Yes but the chicken is a pullet therefore inherited what looks like silver from her father (maybe she is gold based but I think not.(
Most of the roosters I run are silver or golden. My only pure Golds are a sebright and a Spitzhauben. The Chamios and one Phoenix rooster are my only possible dom white contributors. Don't know if the Phoenix was or was not dom white tho as they are supposed be recessive. It was from a breeder tho that called it platinum. 🤷‍♀️
