Thinking about turning my OEGBs into their standard sized counterpart. What would be the best route to go?

I could use Malay, Red JungleFowl hybrids, Pure Red JungleFowl, or Black Sumatra(Extra Fancy).

Which of the birds listed would be best to use for resizing a Bantam?

Is there a reason not to use standard sized Old English Games? I know Cackle Hatchery sells some.

How big do you want to go? You might be able to work withing OEGB by just picking the larger-than-normal individuals. You could also order from several hatcheries, and see if one line runs bigger than another.

I don't know what is BEST, but here are some of the traits I see:

Hen/rooster weights, taken from Cackle Hatchery (click on "breed facts" in the sidebar list.)
Red Junglefowl, 3 lbs/ 4.5 lbs
Sumatra, 4 lbs/ 5 lbs
Standard Old English, 4 lbs/ 5 lbs
I think you already have Malays, right? If so, you can go weigh one to see how big they are.
For Jungle Fowl hybrids, you would have to weigh them too-- it depends on what they are mixed with.

Looking at body shapes, I see that Sumatras have a low-set tail, and Malays have a very upright posture. Red Jungle Fowl are closer to the shape I expect in an OEGB, but I might be missing some details. No clue on the Jungle Fowl hybrids.

Sumatras also have extra-long tail feathers (not Phoenix-long, but longer than normal.) Sumatras and Malayes both have pea combs. All of these are extra genes that you would probably want to breed out, since OEGB have single combs and more normal length tail feathers.

The Jungle Fowl hybrids are the one I know least about, because you don't say what they are mixed with. But they may be the most useful, depending on which traits they actually have.

If you want particular colors, you may save some bother by crossing to something that already has the right color or a similar color. If you don't care what color, then don't worry about that.

If you just want REALLY BIG, go with the biggest of the available options. (Probably biggest by weight, rather than by height.)

You don't have to choose just one breed-- you might cross with two different breeds, then interbreed the offspring.

If you already have all of these breeds, you could hatch a few of each cross and evaluate what you get. If you have some of them, you could start by trying what you have. If you do not have any, you might seriously consider buying Standard Old English rather than any of the ones you listed. (But I think I remember you having Malays and maybe some of the others.)

The reason is that I would need to have a separate area, in order to keep males separated. So, I just wanna do a tamer/less territorial version of the Standard OEGs.

Size range, I want is like the Sumatra, 5lb roosters, & 4lb hens. But not the Sumatra attitude though.

My Malays were close to 10lbs the last time I weighed them. Will have weigh them again.

The JungleFowl hybrids are Red JungleFowl/American Game crosses, multi generational. I did mention that somewhere in this thread.

In that case, if you like the temperatment of the Malays, I would probably start with them. Cross OEGB to the Malays, then cross the offspring back to the OEGB.

By using the biggest of the options, I think you've got a better chance of recovering OEGB traits while keeping enough of the added size.

The Jungle Fowl hybrids are probably the other best choice.

If you don't like the Sumatra attitude, I would not use them.

What's wrong with the Sumatra Attitude?

Also the best case is to use Large Jungle Fowl/American Game cross males over OEGB females.

I can try it with the Malays, I may end up with something like a Modern Game, instead, since those were created by breeding OEG X Malay.

My Sumatra rooster Demon likes to try kicking my butt. He hates me. I had a friendly Sumatra rooster, but Demon killed him some time early spring. The Sumatra hen isn't aggressive, just not fond of being held.

It's hard to get a non human aggressive rooster from Sumatras.

I only have 2 Female JungleFowl/American Game crosses.

When I go to increasing size of my OEGBs, would the slate legs from the JungleFowl Hybrids be dominant, & hard to breed out? I don't mind slate legs, but wanna follow the standard for certain color requirements for the breed.

Slate legs are recessive. id+ is sex linked recessive
