The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

It's periodically with her, she laid dark olive yesterday, she just laid me an olive with blue coating today.
Feed's been the same, & daylight has been increasing. Blue coated egg, I wettened in the middle to show it's olive.

That's probably just a heavy layer of bloom, the same thing that makes brown eggs look pink.

The turquoise she lays, have no brown coating. I'll get a picture the next time she lays it.
Yes, there can be variations in how much brown is on an egg.
That's why hens who lay brown will sometimes lay lighter or darker eggs, or occasionally even white ones.

Between changes in the amount of brown, and changes in the amount of bloom, you can get quite a variety of shades from one hen.

It does seem that some hens lay more variable eggs and some lay more consistent eggs. Of course consistent eggs are one of the things commercial layers are selected for, but olive eggers are new enough that getting olive eggs at all is the main focus in their breeding at present.

How come All of these Mysteries are happening at MysterChicken Coop? What's going on at her Coop? 🧐

Olive Eggers are new to me, so the 3 colors I get from her didn't seem like something to expect from an Olive Egger. I've looked into the "breed," & never came across information that mentions, variants in their color, except breeding them.

I haven't seen anything about it either, but I have seen that some hens lay more consistently-colored eggs than others.

And I made an assumption that consistency of color is not yet important to people breeding olive eggers, because they are still focusing on getting hens with the blue egg gene, plus enough brown coating to count as "olive."

All interesting.
