I will take the advice and for now keep one of each bachelor roosters I think I have Australorp, BO, welsummer, I don't think I will try and RIR. I will have to look at what roosters there are....

Yeah, I would avoid RIR, which is probably really a Production Red, which don't usually have the best temperaments.

A diff family just got a new coop, and only had 4 hens and a rooster. I gave them 2, 9 month old hens EE and an OE. Their little girl was happy to get more birds. They may want one of my roosters too, theirs is getting old.
Seriously this sounds ideal. You get to play with and dote on a bunch of fuzzy butts then select your favorites to keep and good deed out the rest. Well done and good karma as well.

A neighbor just stopped by and said he wants to give me 5 chickens because a friend of his doesn't care for her chickens, and he says "I can tell you are really good to your birds." I am going to prepare a separate area for these birds. Keep and eye out make sure they are healthy. I would make sure they are healthy first, but I just might re-home them if they are good, I am trying to raise the breeds I want, and not have "randoms". I am also keeping hens of a certain age. I am not a chicken retirement home. (I trade them out at 2 and I always have takers.) But yes I do keep the favorites. I have people calling looking for spare hens if they lost one, or need more, or company for their hens. I also have people asking for roosters.
