The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

Hi everyone! What is the egg production like with your Bantam Orps? How many eggs per week?

My pullet started laying a few weeks ago & is giving us 6 eggs per week. Is this normal or is it because she' so young? I know they lay year round, but do they lay less in the winter?

I was told my large Orps would avg 3-5 eggs per week. Those girls (same age = 25 weeks old) don't have red combs yet, so we're still waiting.

I must admit, I never expected much out of my little bantam orp, Cookie. Now that she's older, she really calmed down. Although she's not at the top of the pecking order, she thinks she is. Rather than sleep on a lower roost with the big, pullet Orpingtons, Cookie flies above the high roost & onto the window sill. (She's the only one small enough to fit.) This way she's ABOVE the roo & the top hens. She also runs between their legs to snag the top treats. All the big chickens let her get away with it, so she acts like a queen. Her nickname is the "Bantam Menace."
Hi Faraday40: Six eggs per week, wow. She'll probably slack off to zip for a week or so, then perk back up. Mine are 1 yr / 2mos old. They'll lay for 3 days in a row, skip a day, and so forth. As for the 'red combs', my orp's don't show a prominent red, but more of a faded shade of red. Mine are very active also.

Mine lay pretty well, about 5 +/- 1 a week... Except that they are horrid broodies! Almost every week I would have to break a broody... And I only had 3 pullets! Way, way, way worse than my Silkie girls.

I caught my 9 yr old daughter playing Barbies with our little Bantam Orp today.

This is our Bantam Menace: named Cookie. Again, I'm not sure why a chicken was needed to play Barbies, but I grabbed my camera. Just too funny.

Terrific. My grand daughters were over the other day. They giggled at how spooky my chickens are. They said they could pick up all their chickens easily.

Most of our chickens are always underfoot, so catching one simply means bending down to scoop one up. This bantam (our only bantam)requires a few steps, but it's not like we need to chase her either. All were hatched by my daughter, so they have no fear & know who feeds them. This is what it looks like when they spot one of us in the yard.

My Chocolate bantams started laying this week!

Help! I only have this one BBS bantam and I have no idea if its a pullet or a cockerel!! It was hatched under my boody and raised by her until 6 weeks, and didnt feather up really until then so I feel it might be slower developing than my other chicks of the same age too as they were raised inside under a lamp. Now nearly 8 weeks... But anyway...what do you experienced folk think?
