The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

My 17 month old Buff Orpington bantams are sure looking pretty, after completing their molt. Need to take some pics of them. My flock has grown back to 24 total. What am I going to do?

Eat a lot of eggs. LOL

I offer extra eggs for sale to visitors, students, neighbors, etc. I only have one bantam orp, but when choosing their eggs, the kids always fight over her tiny eggs. The adults are more practical & always choose the giant LF Orp eggs. (One hen makes 2.8-3.0 oz eggs. Ouch!)

Has anyone here found their little orps broody? Are they a known broody breed like silkies or cochins?

My Cookie is acting broody AGAIN. (She acted broody back in Oct, molted, took a break, started laying end of Dec, than started acting broody a little over a week ago.)

I decided to get some fertile eggs for her & wanted to know what others have experienced with this breed. (She's my only English Bantam Orpington, & I'm not very familiar with broodies either.)

My daughter is working on a science project & needed a broody hen volunteer, so I hope Cookie cooperates. I'm amazed at how wide she can make herself look when she fluffs up. For now, we gave Cookie some dummy eggs & golf balls to play with until we pick up the fertile ones.

My 4 buffs are 17 month old. One went broody for r a short time in the spring. They've just come out of molt , and back to their erratic laying cycle of 0ne, or two, then four. So far they are not showing good signs for broodiness.

My Cookie lays almost an egg a day. (Jan 1-27, she laid 23 eggs) She started acting broody around Jan 20 & hasn't made an egg since Jan 27. It was a similar pattern back in the fall when she 1st started laying. She's only 9 mo old & this is her second time playing broody. This time we're going to give her some fertile eggs.

I am looking for someone who will sell me some good quality bantam orpingtons. I don't need show quality, but I have no desire to order from a hatchery again. I live at high altitude in Colorado so can't do hatching eggs unless there is someone who also raises birds at a high altitude. Can anyone recommend some good sources?
