The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

Have you contacted them yet? They do not look like I would expect them to. So I think they are something else.

What color are their legs?

This is called "smut" in Buff varieties. It may go away when they molt. If not, use them with a good quality male. It will give you the best color in offspring. It does appear to be a bit much smut, but these are chicks,. After they molt their chick feathers they may feather back great. A Buckeye chick will be multi-colored for months. Then about 4 or so months old they feather in a dark "Buckeye" color. DO NOT CULL a Buff until its about 6 months or so old.

I have 16 BOBs from Ideal... but, 14 of them are growing feathers with black flecks - the other two have buff colored feathers. Is this normal? What did I get? When do you think I will be able to know their sex?

Does this look like a BOB to you?? I am very curious to know what the hatchery has to say.

Jim, I totally disagree this is way too much black to be just normal smutt. There has to be something else going on with them, Buckeyes are supposed to be Red Columbian, whereas Buff Orpingtons are supposed to be Self Buff so they shouldnt have any other color then buff. I do agree on not culling until they get their adult feathers though, theres always room for a suprise plus it would be interesting to see how they turn out. As for breeding to get a better buff color, if they keep having that much buff Id bet it would take several years to get the birds back to being self buff.

I have hatched quite a few pure bantam buff orps and NEVER have I had that.

I agree NOT normal smutt and would not use them as regular buffs and unfortunately you will probably not be able to show them, looks like something may have jumped pens at the hatchery.

It does seem a bit much smut, but they may grow out of it. Just like a black chick with a white feather. When they molt the white feather is never seen again. Do take photos at every stage of growth. Call Ideal and ask for Ross Windham. At best he may offer credit on a future order. I have seen many of their adult birds and never seen and smut in them. It is possible something happended or they switched males or something. Defintely communicate with them.
