My bantam Mauve Orpingon went broody & hatched 3 chicks!

Blue split to Chocolate cockerel on the left, Chocolate pullet on the right.


Splash- don't know whether this is a male or female yet. If a boy, he'll be Splash split to Chocolate, if a girl she will be Mauve (Chocolate & Blue), with 2 copies of the Blue gene.


Always right next to momma, who wouldn't hold still for the camera.

Cookie's doing well. A few mishaps occurred so I'm very happy & surprised we have development. This is the 1st time we're allowing a broody to stay in the main coop. We hung some plastic mesh over the opening to prevent the other hens from stealing her nest or bullying her.
Day 5 (before the 1st candling) an egg got smashed. Egg caked on Cookie's chest! I removed the wet bedding, but didn't do anything to the eggs or hen. (Funny but the incubator egg from the same breed was clear on day 7 & tossed on day 10 when it smelled.) Perhaps the roo in that breeding pen had a problem. All I requested was an assortment, so the eggs were labeled by breed.
Day 7 Candled to see all remaining eggs developing!

Day 11 On a brisk day, I didn't open up the nest in the am for Cookie's bio break, so Cookie let herself out. When I returned at noon to let her out, I found her sitting on 2 infertile eggs one nest over. She either couldn't get back in or got lost on the way back to her nest, so I just put her back in place.
Day 14 Candled & all eggs developing!
Hatch Date should be June 30 or July 1. I'm not going to bother her with any more candling. She got pretty upset & pecked at me.
Meanwhile last year's broody (Princess Lay-a) decided to give motherhood a second try. At this point, we don't have the time to let her incubate (project is due on July 20), so I may simply let her adopt a few incubator chicks instead. (If she had only started one week earlier!)

Here's our little Cookie waiting for her eggs to hatch. This is the 1st time we left a broody in the coop. The mesh prevents the bigger hens from kicking her out. Yes, it looks like she's in jail. Today is day 19 or 20. I peeked & saw a pip.

WE HAVE CHICKS!






So far, the broody has once again been faster than the incubator. (Eggs from the same source were set at the same time. Only 1 pip inside incubator & most of Cookie's eggs have hatched.) I cannot tell exactly what hatched yet, but one looks like a silkie. Of course the goal is to find out which has the higher hate rate, so I don't want to mess around with her until all the eggs are done hatching. Tomorrow is supposed to be the hatch day.

It's going to be a crazy assortment: Barnevelders, Marans, LF Cochin, Sebrights, Silkies, Easter Eggers, & Olive Egger. (Basically, I bought whatever was available locally.) Princess Lay-a is patiently waiting for her golf balls to hatch. She's even "talking" to them. I'm definitely going to give her a few incubator chicks when they hatch.
