I am guessing I may have some sort of mauve splash.
Mine have white wing feathers growing in. Even my darkest is lighter than yours. See above post #1972. The lightest looked like a yellow peep.

Like you, my choc & blacks were much easier to determine. The good news is that their feathers will start growing by the end of their 1st week, so you won't have long to wait. Gender on the other hand....... That one can feel like forever waiting for an answer!

I see your little light one. How are they looking now? Still white-ish?

My lightest one looked about like that really, I think the pic looks darker than actual. These hatched last Thursday and Friday (7/28-7/29), and I did notice some wing feathers coming in quickly, so I'll try to get some comparative pics this weekend.

And gee thanks on the reminder that sexing takes forever! LOL

I know I have 3 boys already, barred... the blessing and the curse of the head dot.

I'm looking in to getting some orps when I do get my chickens but I'm not sure if I want bantam orps or normal ones. Any input? Experience or personal opinion?

I have one bantam & several LF orps. Our bantam lays well when not broody. But, she goes broody a lot. (4-5xs per year!) My LF orps have never gone fully broody. I remove eggs frequently throughout the day to remove the broody temptations, but the little hen will collect & try to hatch anything resembling an egg. The bantam seems to have a lot of attitude & doesn't realize she's small. Feed & poop are also less for any bantams. Although the bantam will sit on my lap, the LF are the big cuddlers. The only thing my large orps like more than snuggles are treats. Any visitor can just bend down & pick up a LF orp. They're truly gentle giants & go great with children. They are laid back, quiet, docile, and lay bigger eggs. The LF orps are not economical, though. I honestly love both types - just for different reasons.

Thanks! I prefer bantams but there are a few breeds I'm leaning toward LF on, like the orp.

I hatched them myself and raised them. I didn't work with them individually, and didn't handle them overly often, so maybe that's where I failed. But if I could only have one set, it would be my bantams, hands down. I've had both go broody, although the bantams much more so.

Having said that, I think it all depends on your goals. My LF's provide beautiful eggs which produce awesome chicks and a little extra income for me, so I'm keeping them too. For bird size though, my bantams lay about as big an egg as the large girls. My comets lay much bigger eggs than my lavenders!

Hi, interested in bantam orps so I thought i would join this thread. I have LF ORP OOSTER AND SOME YOUNG ones that I hatched from eggs. @Honoratold me she really likes her bantam orps. She said they are hard to find.
