The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

Pics
Can you get half-way decent Bantam Orps through any of the hatcheries? I have seen a few listing the Buffs. I can't keep a cockerel so I won't be breeding, and I have had terrible luck getting hatching eggs sent up (I live in Alaska) so I really would love to find something half-way stocky and fluffy available through a hatchery!

Disregard, trying some different search terms revealed exactly what I was looking for. I will give Cackle a shot when spring rolls around. I have also heard very good things about their bantam Dominques, so maybe I will try a bit of both!

Cackle's original Buff Orp Bantams came from Brazelton. I know of several top breeders that have supplied hatching eggs to both Cackel and Ideal. If you order enough and cull heavy, you will get some that are fairly good. My first Buff Orp bantams came from Cackel. Only got beat once in over 10 years and it was by Brazelton. Another good source is hatching eggs from Andy Anderson. His info is in the classifieds of the Poultry Press.

Although they started with good lines it doesnt mean they lasted.

True, it only takes one generation to undo many years of hard work, but here's hoping they are adequate for my purposes. I have actually been delighted with the recent pictures I have seen of some of the other bantam breeds coming from Cackle. Even if these aren't on par, it will be interesting to see where they do stand.

Thank goodness for hatcheries. I'd be totally SOL without them!

OK, I think I've got this photo thing figured out.

These are only head shots, but here are the two bantam Orps I kept from the eggs I got from HenThymes - 10 weeks old in these photos. The one couldn't be anything but a girl, and is feminine and shy. But the other one ....... LOOKS like a roo, (wattles are bigger now) but doesn't act like one. It hasn't crowed or tried to mount the girls, isn't growing spurs, but is 30% or more larger in size than the pullet. I'm giving it more time to 'reveal' itself - especially since it isn't causing any trouble.

I will try to get full body shots when the weather is better. It's dark and rainy here right now.

Tricia~

Here are the pics I took today. Having had a chance to look at them, these actually look like they might be feathering in splash so one of my black girls must be a dark blue. Who knew...

This all of the flock before the black rooster died. I swear they look black.

As if on cue, I heard a weird noise this morning. It better not be that little whatsit learning to crow! If it's a rooster, it can't stay. I live in town - in tight quarters at that - and noise ordinances here mean no roos in town. I've already had one inquiry on a local facebook page from a lady who grew up with a good-tempered pet rooster, and wants to find one for her own kids. We'll see.

Have you read about the genetic problem with my cochin on the cochin thread? I never intended to breed her, but with the possibility that this sweet Orp chick might be a boy, it crossed my mind that - since I like the look of the fluffy English Orps - I could cross the Orp and Cochin. But, she's blue and I don't like the colors that result from that cross, so I dropped the idea. 'Dodged that bullet!
