the best chicken food

You can sprout pretty much any grain you buy from a feed store or the bulk section of a grocery/food co-op.

This page covers it pretty well:

Thank you for sharing.

Do you find that your chickens prefer sprouted or straight scratch from the bag?

Does anyone else prefer sprouting their grains/seeds?

Ours loved the sprouted grains. Think about it, their favorite thing is digging up tender little plats that are just sprouting out of the ground. You're emulating that. Plus, sprouted grains are more nutritious because they're more digestible.

I found a farm 75 miles from me that does a organic non soy, non corn feed. It is $21.50 a 50 bag so I get three months at a time, worth the trip, worth the gas. It's is cracked and whole seed mix, they love it. Look for private feed mills and connect with other chicken folk, go in together to get more and that will lower travel cost to

Going to try this- thank you for sharing. So do your chickens seem to prefer the feed sprouted or straight from the bag.
Mine go for there feed before any sprouted grains.

The thing that you have to remember is that the chickens digestive system is not designed to digest high amounts grass/sprouts.
The digestive system is designed to digest grains, seeds, fruits and meat.

It does depend on what they like.

I have found mine to go off some feed after a while.

However the brand they do like is Omlet mixed pellet feed, looks like large chick crumb.

They seen to enjoy it, it a little expensive.

Thanks for posting the links about sprouting. I'm now convinced that this is the way I'll get my girls through our nutritionally lean winter months. The articles were very helpful!
