The best part of having chickens

everything you said and then some. The reason to get outside every day and every nite to check on my girls and make sure they have food and water. Rain , snow sleet and or hail. lol. Good exercise and they are pleasant to be around. My one Sweet Pea comes running everytime I step out my door. The rest follow her and it is pleasant to have something pleased to see me. I know it is for treats and warm food in winter, but still they loves me. lol.

I definitely agree! I would never spend the time outdoors in the winter if I didn't have chickens. The more you're out in the cold, the more you build up your tolerances for it.
Winter skies are spectacular. I was noticing some wispy clouds today that I would have never appreciated if I weren't outdoors. It never ceases to amaze me what beauty Mother Nature creates!
beautifully put. I'M NOT CRAZY! I TRIED TO TELL THEM!
Thank you.

LOL

I have many birds but I think my 2 faves are a RIR hen that flies sometimes 75 feet to land on my shoulder...or head.....or chest... or back...to be the first one to get at the treats or the BuffOrp hen that races up the rail(straight skinny tree) that holds the gate closed(broke the spring) apparently just to greet me much pacing and conversation.
I can't say for sure if the best part of keeping chickens is the beautiful site of an array of sizes and colors or the food security. Yes I eat some of my birds, I love fresh homemade, homegrown chicken soup on a cold day and where I live it gets COLD.
I love fresh eggs that have a nice rich yellow(almost orange) color and the taste is, quite simply, amazing.
I'veenjoyed reading the posts this eve. It's 11:30PM here and this was a nice way to end the day.
Thank you

Ok time for me to stop lurking. I've been lurking all around this great site since late November when I started my first flock. I am having a ball with my chickens and the biggest thing they have changed for me is now I get up at the crack of dawn to open the cook so my girls can get out in the run and to give them fresh water. I keep their hanging feeder and also a PVC feeder stocked at all times. I used to lay in bed till my dog woke me up which was shortly after daylight. Now I have to get up and take her out before its good and light so I can get to the coop and check on the girls. Now one of my biggest problems is trying to find a way to drag myself away from this site.

I saw a documentary about a hen rescue in which a woman who had adopted some hens said they are "naturally cheerful." That's what I love about them -- they are always sweet, contented, and companionable with me and each other: full of cheer.

Also -- I will never think about where my food comes from the same way again. I appreciate seeing firsthand the work that goes into making an egg.

Before OCD (Obsessive Chicken Disorder) the only time i went into the backyard was to let the dog out. now i'm in there almost all the time!

Yep. This is why I got chooks. I'm a terrible gardener, but a great pet owner. So they motivate me to spend time in the yard, do some gardening, USE THE SPACE I PAY A FORTUNE TO HAVE!

And chick tv is every bit as soothing as an aquarium (which I also have).

My absolute favorite part of having chickens is going into the barn (we keep them in a stall connected to the pasture--like a super coop!) and saying "good morning chickies!" And hearing all of their unique replies :)

Makes it worth the walk through the cold outside :)
