The best part of having chickens

Just one favorite thing? Can't do it, love them for so many reasons, but here are a few:
Calling them and watching them come running.
Hatching chicks in the incubator and watching them come to life.
Sharing them with my daughter.

I'm glad I'm among people who understand

I love their vocalizing and enjoy their songs! Love it when they all run over when they hear the back door open! Love the eggs..and of course they are so pretty!

One of my favorite things is snuggling with them. They'll just come over and jump up on my lap, or fly on my shoulder, and then I'll just pet them and they stay there for a long time, especially if I have snacks. Other than that and their personalities that make my heart burst with love for them, it gives me something to actually go outside for and do some work. I'm always cleaning out the houses or laying down more hay when needed, and then throwing out feed and scraps for them. Overall, they are the best animals I have ever had, and they mean a lot to me. My babies <3

(I have Silkies, Mille Fleur D'uccle, and Sebrights)

Just like Miss Dottie, i have many things i love about my chickens! Such as: the way Josephine plays with the zipper on my coat, the way they play tug-o-war with dinner scraps, when they run up to me when i visit them, how they like to look and play with my shoes, even when i am still wearing them!, after a big meal they all go to their outside perch to preen their feathers and doze in the sunlight and how soft and FLUFFY they are.

My flock used to get all the best leftovers but then DH got the piggies. Now they follow him to the pig pen every morning. After a few near muggings, DH and the piggies have learned to share the wealth.

Today is glorious! The sun is shinning, it is nearly 50 degrees, and I went down and cleaned out the run, hauled that up for garden mulch, pulled out the bedding in the coop and piled in a corner, for the girls to scratch through. For some reason they never dig in it in the coop, but pull it out to the light of day, and it is full of interesting things.

But mostly it is just a good excuse to get outside, stomp around and rejoice getting over a cold.

I like my chickens cause they get me outside and moving around. Good for my physical health, good for my mental health.

Amen!

My oldest has begged for chickens since he was 2...but my memories of being pecked by old hens in a 100+ degree coop as a child tasked with gathering eggs whenever I visited my aunt (not to mention the gander who terrorized me there) made me hesitant. That's an understatement--I was terrified of those birds. I finally caved last year and we picked up silkie chicks from a feed store--my son had been reading about chicken breeds on the internet and that was what he wanted.

I didn't realize how much fun they would be! They are soft, little fluff balls who wouldn't dream of pecking anyone--not even my youngest whom I've caught zooming around the backyard with one like it was a toy fighter plane. They come when we call and follow us around the backyard talking softly to tell us all the latest news. And the eggs! My boys get so excited about finding an egg (which happens daily) that it works as an incentive for them to get out of bed in the mornings which is a huge improvement over pre-chicken days.

But my favorite part is just watching my oldest with his "peeps". He's taught me the joy of having chickens:

And now I want more!

I love this photo! So glad you let your son talk you into chickens!
