The big chicken turn off…

My sister-in-law will not eat anything I have processed. Eggs are ok, but not chicken now that she knows I took care of mine.
Last year when I had 5 roosters, she actually told me that if I killed any of them we would have to "re-evaluate" our friendship.
So I managed to give them away.
This year I never told her about the Cornish X birds I had, when I decided to mention it to her, knowing my DH would not keep quiet (he is to honest). So, She wrote back and made the comment or "its ok, you are a farmer. Please, just don't give me any". So I think I've made a great bit of head way in a year! lol.
Hope next year she'll try some! lol. I have no idea why folks are like that. It does taste different, it will have a diff texture etc, but its such a high grade of quality meat that was treated more humanely then what there cousins would ever know. That is enough for me- oh, and if you have seen me, I don't need another growth hormone in my food!!!!!

I think what bothers me more is the feed. Some broiler feeds have ground up chicken, feathers etc! I 'pert neah' blew a gasket. GROSS.
I was able to feed mine plant proteins, not previous ground up- possibly diseased poultry. I have certainly learned a whole lot and things I wish I had not learned-

Meat is an interesting issue with most people. I don't like the taste of venison but if I did I'd eat it. My husband is a rabbit hunting junky and I won't touch that meat. I don't really know why. He gives away most of what he gets anyway. He doesn't eat as much of it as he used to. Our neighbors and family really enjoy the rabbit meat though. We even traded it for farm fresh eggs before we got our own chickens. It doesn't pay to be wasteful.

Farm fresh eggs seem to be an issue as well. When I was a little kid I didn't eat them because of the brown shells, but that's only because I was a very picky child. I love em now! They are so much better in quality. My SIL won't take any of the eggs I have offered her. She hasn't really come out and said that she doesn't like farm fresh eggs but that must be it. She paid over two dollars for a dozen at the store (she was in line behind me) even though I offered her free farm fresh eggs. Some people don't know what they are missing.

My DBF and I live in the city. We've got a teensy city lot (woohoo... 0.10 acre!!) and we are considering getting some meaties next spring. Every time I mention it to my mom, her response is, "You don't want to do that". I'm always perplexed: If I didn't want to do it, why would I say I did??" Guess I need to check with her next time on what I REALLY want, huh?

I spent my senior year of college in France. I experienced - and loved - many new foods. Rabbit, pigeon, and duck were among those things I tried. They're now some of my favorites.

Unfortunately, this is what many people think when they hear of deer, rabbits, eggs, or ducks, gracing a table... and it's why they don't eat these things.

I don't see how you guys can eat meat? First it is unhealthy it causes heart disease, makes you fat, and why does the animal have to die for your tastebuds when you can just eat 'bogo burgers' which taste exactly the same and are alot healthier. I plan on having chickens when I have kids and my kids no slash that my whole family will be vegetarian, but you can eat what you want to eat just my oppion. My dad is mean though he is a major meat eater he is like one of those guys who thinks you have to have meat at every meal or its incomplete, so he thinks vegetarians are stupid and grounds me if I even mention it. I did it for a summer than he found out, so now I sneak the meat in the trash or to the dog when ever he isn't looking.

We go to Dillons alot and they give us extra vegtables, and fruits that r going bad and we feed them to our chickens.

What foolishness! Sheesh, the junk you get in the grocery stores will kill ya. I assume it because it seems too much like a "pet" in some way. Odd.

Granted my layers are my babies but the meat birds are just that...named fried Chicken, Chicken Pot Pie, Chicken Soup, BBQ ...etc etc.

I used to have an issue with people killing deer...... when I lived in the city!

Now I live surrounded y them and they are prey animals! If no one culls the herds they end p diseased, road kill or starving to death. We have some one come in each fall, (dh doesn't like to hunt), that shares our philosophy.

He kills two or three depending on how big the herd has gotten over the year. When he kills them we thank the deer for giving us its sustenance and thank the universe for giving us the deer. I truly feel like this is proper stewardship of our land and our wild population.

Prey animals breed in large numbers because they are meant to be eaten. If we don't eat them, and there are no other predators than can, the animals life is wasted and they suffer needlessly.

Now I generally won't eat meat I haven't been around to thank at the time they died....

My vegetarian friend is appalled -- but he lives in the city..........
