CHAPTER 20 WEEKEND ADVENTURE, PART 2
The next day was Sunday; a day when both humans were home. This was the little flocks first Sunday all penned up. The biggest little rooster was a little bit unhappy because the humans were hanging out around the coop and run, which meant he couldnt escape. The good news was, with them hanging around, the coop got a new window, and some siding.
As soon as the humans walked away, he snuck out of the pen. All the girls loved him, but it seemed there were 3 who followed him everywhere. It boosted his ego to have them run after him. And you know what happens when a guys ego is boosted. Yes, He does something silly.
He decided to take the little girls on an adventure. They had not been over to the big brown monsters yard since that bad day. He wanted to show the little girls that he was extremely brave. They were quite scared to go over there, but they knew the biggest little rooster would protect them. None of the girls wanted to be first, so there was quite a bit of line shuffling going on. They finally compromised, huddling in a very tight group several steps behind the biggest little rooster.
It seemed as if they were just getting comfortable, starting to peck and scratch at the goodies under the neighbors deck when they heard the sounds of the humanlady calling chickens
come here chicky chickens. Personally, they were very glad she called them, and immediately went running to her. Even the biggest little rooster was somewhat happy to be called.
The chickens were led safely into their pen. Then the humans went away in the rolling human carrier. It started to get dark, and they all had a big discussion as to whether to go into the coop or not. No one wanted to be first. It was dark in there, even with the new big window. They wanted the biggest little rooster to go first, but he did some quick thinking and reminded them all that his job was to stay outside and make sure they got in safely. So, they all huddled around the pop door. Every so often, one of them would poke her head inside, or look as if she was going to jump in. But, they were all chicken.
The humans came home after it got dark. The humanguy went to make sure everyone was tucked in, and shouted to the humanlady that none of them were in the coop. She couldnt believe that. While the humanguy started searching the run, the humanlady looked in the coop window and laughed.
Uh, humanguy, I found the chickens she said.
Where? he asked.
The humanguy came around to the window and looked in. And could see a bunch of fuzzybutts. All eight chickens had entered the vestibule. And that is where they stayed, all squashed together, until the humanlady pushed them into the coop.
