Looks like the mud is finally drying up. It's almost time to seperate the seramas and start hatching eggs. Also lost a maran hen yesterday. I believe she was egg bound, so I did everything I could but couldn't save her sadly

Yea I'm pretty sure that was the first time I had it happen. I guess they need even more calcium

The first time I had it happen was last month with a button quail hen. I used a screwdriver to get the egg out before I rehomed her and all my other button quail.

Yeah, when my hen was egg bound I gave her 900mgs of calcium every day.

A lot of my button quail are old and starting to die off, so I might not replace them now. Plus if I wanted to hatch any more eggs from them I would need to add new genetics since they are already kinda inbred

Online I read that for quail you can try breaking the egg. I think it’s because quail eggs stay together more and aren’t as sharp as chicken eggs. I actually tried popping the egg but it came right out.

I mean after not being able to pop it, I tried to get it out once it was prolapsed. I gave them oyster shell each day. I think since spring was approaching her mate was trying to mate her more which contributed to her being egg bound. The enclosures I had them in were not big enough at 24x24 inches. I thought Jodi Macdonald’s recommended 20x20 would be enough but next time I’ll do the recommended 3 ft by 2 feet I saw on a website. Another button hen had her back badly scratched from an overactive roo. It’ll be years before I get more buttons as my baby is only 3 months old. DH tried to warn me before I got them but who on this website actually does chicken math until it’s too late lol
