We're newbies. Here is what my husband built after looking at some other coops here. Not sure about insulating yet, going to wait until fall and make that decision. We are also going to run electricity so we can use light and heat lamps if necessary. Our daughter came up with the name "The Breakfast Box" for our coop.

Here is the door where we can go in and change food & water and clean out coop.

Top door is to access the nesting boxes. Bottom two doors are for storage.

Pop door. Still need to add ramp up to deck.

Window that opens. Door at bottom opens to clean out under roost.

Other window.

Roosting area (going to add one more roost). Our floor is made of that plastic decking wood so it should wash out nicely (got it free from a friend

Nesting boxes. Small area on top could use for storage, but I have a feeling the chickens will be up there

. Need to keep an eye out for eggs.

Still a lot of little things to do (run cable for pop door, add vents, paint, add fenced in run area....) Just got done roofing in the cold today. Now if it would warm up we could get the painting done. Hope this helps others

The Breakfast Box really looks great! Your chickens will love it!
IMO, if you already know that you might use a heat lamp sometimes in the winter, I'd insulate. Even when I didn't use a heat lamp, the coop usually stayed close to 10 degrees warmer than outside temps. Your windows will allow a little heat build up during the days, and you can "trap" it in there with insulation. I was able to use a lesser wattage bulb and feel good about my chickens not freezing their hineys off thanks to having an insulated coop.

justtoni44 - I just threw this together after asking my husband real quick what the dimensions were

teach1rusl - Thanks! I'm sure we will end up insulating. Just feeling overwhelmed right now with everything else that needs to be done.

Absolutely adorable and the coop's name is clever!

Your chickens will be very thankful to live there. What kind of roof will it have? Cedar shakes would look nice...ok, I'm biased to those because that's what my coops have.

You have a very talented dh. Is he a carpenter? If so, send him over--I need a big shelf made for my kitchen to hold my baskets and chicken knick-knacks.

Just roofed it today with regular shingles. Yes my husband is a carpenter. Specializes in stone, marble & tile

. If you were closer, I would definitely send him, he does wonderful wood work (I have beautiful bookcases to show for it)!
