The Brooder Floor

I thought about puppy pads, I thought they might be good instead of the paper towel I'm using, I'm changing the brooder twice a day (who would have thought 4 chicks could make so much mess!!!) and I bet they could be cut to size too, rather than tearing the right sized strips of paper towel and arranging them in the brooder. If I ever brood any more I will try them for sure, my chicks are just about to switch to shavings.

I like the idea of multiple layers of paper towels, non-slip for them to gain their footing. Remove when needed/dirty. Then when they are a few days/week old, we will be down to the pine shavings. Seems very simple. Will update after Feb, when I get my chicks

I got lucky, found a huge roll of paper table runner at an auction. It has texture so won't be slippery, and is designed to be absorbent. No cutting, or lines between sheets like paper towels. After a few day, will just take it out and let them go on the pine shavings.

That is, if I don't burn the place down with the heat lamps. How far from the bedding does the light have to be?
