The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

I'm thinking she maybe a he, maybe?? lol very pretty all  of them

Don't say that!!!!!!!!!! Lol!!!!! She doesn't have a raspy voice or even making duckling noises, she quacks all the time. Her voice is def like the mommas and not my 2 males. I think it's just the Pekin in her. One of my yellow ducklings appears to be quacking sometimes but I'm still going with possible males with those 2. Those 2 look like they are gonna be all white like my Pekins but smaller like my Rouens. Idk we shall see!

Ugh male Rouens have green heads don't they? But Females have blackish bills. Pekins don't have either so??? Its a he-she duck lol

Even a cement mixing tub would be nice for her because this is how they keep humidity where it's suppose to be while brooding . I'm glad to hear she is coming out,I've never had any problems since I always made mine come out when I went in and cleaned but I have seen many post here about their ducks not coming out and I have to encourage them to get them outside brooding is hard on them. Keep us updated.
Yes, last one I had go broody, she wouldn't come out of the pen area, but kept staring at the other ducks' area. It turned out that what she wanted was bathing water—I put a cement mixing tub in her section of the pen and she was fine thereafter. She just wanted to clean up!

Good reply! Much better

Sad news to report... seems Momma duck abandoned eggs again. It must have been just shortly after I removed the divider. It appears as one big scattered nest now and eggs are cold. Just wasn't meant to be

I'm so sorry, might now have even been her though, did the rest of the flock have access?might still be hope if you have an incubator I've had hens get off the nest to go out for some stretch time come back and another hen would be laying an egg in her nest so she goes to the one next to it to wait and when they other hen leaves she forgets to get back on the nest and the eggs would be cold but most would still hatch. Or you could try to tidy up the nest and see if she'll come back to them.

Thank you. Yes, the others do have access. Is that ok? I think I will tidy it up and wait it out. I was for sure she was serious because she was sooo grumpy. I did candle the eggs and one looked like this: I just don't see that it can be a live because I never saw any of the in between stages. I'm going to tidy up the nest and see what happens. I do not have an incubator but you can bet it's now on the Christmas list

is that veins up towards the air sac? kinda looks like them . if so that would mean that duckling is pretty far along. Either that or it's rotten but I don't see how because she hasn't been sitting that long this go around right? Sometime other ducks will go in and mess around in the eggs. I'd take a piece of ply wood if you have some and lean it over to the wall and make like a lil private area for the nest it may not keep everyone out if she leaves but it might make her feel more secure.be sure to secure the ply wood to the wall to keep it from falling onto her or the eggs.
