The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

WE are now down to 5 , the others trample number 6. number 5 is doing well other then can not walk well it has saddle legs. which im confused of why because it is not on a smooth flat surface! Im so confused on why this all went the way it did ! but I have another egg hatching but he is in his sac even though he has got the top of its shell off, im hoping it will work its way out. I cant assist due to the fact there is still a lot of blood in its membranes. All that is out of sac is its beak so will have to see what it does.. I think it isn't able for some reason to absorb the inside .Been keeping it moist now just waiting other 2 have not started to pip but are alive.... I have never had so much trouble. :/ but I guess 5 out of 14 I better then none considering what momma has done to most of them.
Past hatched were very successful , she naturally has hatched all together 33 ducklings till this time! I just think its time she stops being allowed.

One of my Muscovies has started brooding. Last night, we noticed about 20 eggs in the nest. This morning, she was doing that cute cooing and tail-wagging that says "leave my eggs alone"! Earlier in the week, I noticed eggs were being laid in one section of the pen more than others, so I left them in the nest. We fixed it last year so there are sections of the pen that can be closed off so the brooding ducks are safe from predators and the other ducks. This hen is in the section right where we wanted her to be! So, I have marked the calendar and will keep watch over what happens in the brooding pen. Last year, this duck tried brooding under a shed, with no success, though she did get a couple of eggs to the point of nearly hatching or hatching and dying shortly thereafter. I'm hopeful this year she will be successful.

Ok, I have a million questions! lol......We have been raising and hatching chickens for quite a while, but are just getting started with ducks. Over the weekend, I bought 4 Khaki-Campbell ducks and a Drake. They have just started laying according to the guy I bought them from. I brought them home Friday evening and didn't get any eggs Friday night, but there was one egg this morning. I figure they need to settle in a few days and calm down a little.

My main question is this: Once they are all laying well, how old does a Khaki-Campbell need to be to go broody? I just can't wait to get a nice little clutch of fuzzy butts running around!

Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated. We are just into Duck-Ed

They definitely need to settle in before you really start getting eggs. It's a good sign that you got one already!

They can go broody at any age, but a lot of Khakis don't ever go broody. They're bred for egg production, a lot of the broodiness has been bred out of them. That's not to say they won't, but it's less likely than some other breeds.

If you've got your heart set on fuzzbutts right away, I'd say invest in a good incubator and hatch them out yourself once everyone is laying fertile eggs.

My Perdy, a grey call, is almost 9 months old and sitting on her very first nest of 9 eggs!

I just got a pair of mallards and the mother layer 13 eggs and 12 hatched today. I was wondering some tips on taking care of them.

Are you taking care of them yourself or letting momma?

You need to put feed and water nearby that the babies can have access to. I would suggest Purina Flock Raiser it's something both momma and babies can have. Make sure the area is predator proof and baby proof. Momma should do a good job taking care of them, but always have a back up plan if not. Then you will need a brooder from them. What's the temps where you live?
