The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

snakes love eggs and it will be back in about a week for more.
that's the only thing I can think of I hope if he comes back I can catch him this time. I really don't want to lose anymore eggs I'm already down to 9 maybe 8? This far into it unless somebody else takes one what are the chances of all of them making it to hatch?

Very good chance since you say she is dedicated now. I mean you could always have some that don't make it to hatch but there is a good percent that will maybe all of them. I had a Muscovy sit on 8 and hatch 8, one did die a day later but she had a good hatch.

I have heard my ducks thrashing around inside of their stall and went out to look and there would be a 5-6 foot blk snake in there with her. I just pull them out by their tails and toss them over the fence, but last year we actually had on get hold of one of our day old ducklings, It was a miracle I came upon that scene and was able to rescue that duckling.

What a sweet pic, are you keeping any of them?
No, there is another BYC'er on the Mi thread that may want the last 4. But mom has laid 1 egg a few days ago, so maybe she will do another clutch, hopefully smaller. My husband did want to try some for meat, hear they are not oily like other duck. Wait and see what happens, but they have been so fun, just really hate taking the babies from mom lil by lil.

That would be scary, I'm glad i don't have to deal with snakes here. Very rarely I'll see a gardener snake in the garden, but that's it and that's enough. lol

It was this poor lil duckling had been dragged through the fence and had this snake wrapped around it, It was amazing it survived, it had a wound on it's leg I brought it inside and kept it over night to make sure it was going to be okay, it was so I took it back and gave it to mom, little did I know that duckling would end up being my 4th drake. dh calls him snake bite but his name is Henry. I had to unwind the snake from it and I actually killed that snake, I don't usually kill our blk snakes since they kill the rats and mice.

snake bite that's cute. 4 drakes how many ducks do you have. I don't bother black snakes either but if I find one stealing eggs not sure what I will do.. I killed a rattler at the end of my driveway last year and my youngest found a copperhead at my uncles pond those I don't play with

By the time the rest go she'll be ready to see them go, kinda like when your kids move out, your sad to see them go but really happy their gone too. Whew.
