The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

It may take her a whileo to start laying since she has been moved to a new home, but the head bobbing means shie is flirting the feathers could mean molt. Mine are beginning to molt. which means eggs will be delayed till after she is through. How are they doing with your ducklings?

I took the ducklings out! The bigger ducks were not letting them go past tgem without nipping at them, also when jewels (duckling) got in the pool with them the drake pulled him/her by its tail feathers so I got my babirs out of there. Babies r back indoors. I was thinking that maybe cause I tried moving too fast they are still asuming there chickens! (just a thought) im going to gradually introduce the ducklings like I should have done 1st as the last thing the poor ducks were with was pecking chickens x thanks for ur input x is there anything I can do to help through the molt x

I usually give mine poultry vitamins when they are going through molt just a couple times a week. Helps boost the immune system. extra protein too, I use dried meal worms others use dry cat kibble [good quality protein ]some even use puppy chow.

I think you were wise to give the babies a better chance of meeting the Runners place them side by side where the older can't get to the littles till the littles are close to same size that way they have time to get use to each other.

It amazes me how fast these guys grow here is an updated picture of olaf now 6 weeks old and so very pretty and definitely a drake

He's the one circled looks a whole lot like my Rouen but his wings are grey instead of blue it's kinda cool looking though

Well, our Pekins abandoned ship but we have a broody Blue Swedish. A snake tried to get her eggs the other night. My husband was out of town so I had to deal with it. It was dark and I shot but missed the snake; it got away:( She still has some eggs. Any suggestions how to protect against another snake attack??

Hardware cloth is about the only thing a snake can't get through, I have had them come into the duck house during the day but once everything is closed for the night the hardware cloth keeps them outside.

It seems I have 4 Blue Runner drakes and 1 white splash Runner drake. They are all around 10-12 weeks old. They have to go and duck soup is not an option. If anyone is interested PM me or go to www.lsshaftsfarm.com for contact info. There's also a post on the 'rehoming' forum. I'm in the Portland, Oregon area. Sorry, no shipping - pick up or delivery only.

I'm getting an egg a day from my two Pekins since 8/17, with the exception of a day or two here or there. The eggs are a good size w/hard shells. Almost every egg is a double-yolk - is that common? It always surprises me to see two yolks as I thought it was kind of rare.

Our first pekin had double yolk eggs about 30% of the time for like, the first month she was laying, and after that, it never seemed to happen again.
