The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Patti, I have a feeling you will have beautiful goslings from your pair.... but if not, I will be happy to figure out some way to get you goslings from my pair.
Do I see a road trip in the near future.

Thanks Miss Lydia. 3 weeks sounds perfect - that's when Snowy's 15 eggs are due to hatch at which time I want to move Snowy into the room Mother Buttless is in now with her babies.

Meet Mother Buttless, Sneakers, Goldie, Tux & Zorro!
What a name for a beautiful mama duck. and those ducklings are precious.. we had 3 Brahma hens once and my dh named them the Bertha Butt Sisters.

Does she have water to bath in? that's one way they keep the humidity up, surprised she would get off the nest while ducklings are hatching to exposing them to air. which dries out membrane too.

Yeah, I don't know what she was thinking. But she did hatch out one successfully. I hatched out 8 of hers. I checked the 4 that were fostered over to crazy mama and 2 sound like they are clicking. She never gets off the nest when it's dark enough to candle, and she is a vicious striker.

Sweet Girl, the muscovy mama is right next to a creek, so she has water. I guess you're just going to have to come give her a lecture about how to mother hatching ducklings!

Did you give the ones you hatched back to her? I have a few that will try to take off an arm too.

I have not given her back the ducklings that have hatched as I can still hear clicking in a few eggs. So I thought I'd wait until she hatched more.

Crazy mama has 3 eggs still clicking. Never had this spread out of a clutch before. If the ones under crazy mama don't hatch today, I'm going to take them, put them back under Sweet Girl (the original mama) and then give crazy mama some eggs out of the incubator that are at day 28 tomorrow and some of which are already internally pipped. Poor crazy mama has been sitting for about 50 days now. She needs some babies, stat!

I have always left the hatchlings in with the eggs. I'd need @Speceider to explain it again, but somehow the hatched babies stimulate the others to hatch. Synchronization is I think the word he used. Perhaps he will arrive later to advise.

My brother went out in the yard to find the one and only hatchling running around lost. It ran right to him and jumped into his hand. Guess who is joining the rest in the house brooder?

I think Sweet Girl needs to go to mama school!
