your right drakes have been known to kill ducklings so to be safe I would give them at least 3-4 weeks before letting them mingle with the drakes . you will probably have to enlarge the area they are in but temp fencing works here.My muscovite has 5 babies. I have a large duck habitat about 40'x40 she made her nest in the corner. I was worried about my 4 young drakes killing the babies so I built a 3'x4 cage and just set it over her and the babies with food and water. I think this is ok to do. Do any of you have any suggestions? When should I remove the cage and let them intermingle?
congratulations!
So much has happened since I was last one here apparently my weeks ran together and today is hatch day.. she appear to abandon the nest the other night for hours so I figured everyone died but last night when I went to throw the eggs out all 3 had externally pipped much to our surprise. So i fully expected when I got home this morning I would have little ducklings so I went out to check and no babies yet but you can feel them moving and rocking and peeping I'm off to bed maybe little duckling when I get up!!!!
oh yes sorry.. she went back on the nest the next day. She ran off that evening and we couldn't find her the next morning at 6 she wasn't on the nest so we assumed she was off all night and that they had died. But that evening she was back on the nestso moms back on the nest?
