~The Broody Thread~

Well a few weeks ago I had 3 Serama hens go broody and hatch 2 chicks. Both chicks didn't survive though. Now another Serama hens is sitting on eggs due in about 2 weeks. I have a Marans hen that has been broody for like 2 months with no eggs. I finally snuck some chicks under her tonight. I have had great luck with broodies for the past few years and much rather use them then brooding chicks myself.
Sorry about the chicks you lost, but good for you! I’m sure mama bird loves having some chicks.

Lol silkies are the broodiest chickens I’ve ever seen. There’s one in the farm I work at. She’s been broody for two YEARS. I don’t mean on and off broody. She‘s been sleeping on the nest for two years. Every month, I shut her out of the next box for a day, and I bring her food and water. Sounds like your silkie is pretty consistent too!
What I had no idea they could be broody that long! Are you sure she is even broody? You should try giving her chicks and see what happens

Yeah, Ivy’s weird. I’m pretty sure she’s broody, but she’s staying out longer every time I shut her out. Now that it’s spring, I don’t know why it never occurred to me to give her some chicks. I’ll do it and let you know how it goes!

I have a broodie bantam Cochin. I finally bought her some fertile eggs…12 eggs, 6 hatched. We lost one (it found a hole and it escaped with one other chick….found one, didn’t find the other😢)
The 5 remaining chicks were ALL ROOSTERS!!! I was pretty sad about that because I have had bad experiences 2 times with roosters so I’m done. So, rehomed the roosters but Miss Broodie went broodie again. Purchased 6 fertile eggs and hoping for girls this time. It my broodie is the best. She goes broodie about 3-4 times a year.
