Orps are buff and English. NHs are "orange" and them darn rocks and wyandottes are whites. In my neck of the woods; they are rough customers

While I do have a definite prejudice in favor of Little Red Hens, I do admire a nice looking NH, orange though they are. I think when in good feather they are a nice radiant color. Not sure what the temperament is, though.

And no, I have NO interest in solid white chickens. Hamburgs on the other hand....

At the moment you better put your sights on the orange birds cuz they are mowing down all the red and white birds in all parts of the US this show season.

thanks for the answers. leaning more towards wyandotes and ameracanas now, like the idea of colored eggs. buckeyes lay a brown egg, right? dark or light brown?

Walt,

Is that the German line of NHs? The ones at the ON were HUGE, but not nearly so many as the white Rocks.

Most of the winning New Hampshires seem to be at least part German. I don't think most know exactly what the percentage is. I got mine from katyinmo. She said the birds I have are "mostly" German. Whatever mine are they have great breeding behind them. The first year they males took 12 monts before the males could be shown. This last bunch I was showing males at 7 months and they were running 9 lbs. I have a 10 month old that weighs 10.5 and feels like a Cornish. Thefemales are ready to show around 5 months. A lot of the difference in these seems to be more color than type. There are a lot of yellow necked or brown females.

The last set of NHs I witnessed had knock knee pretty bad. I see that a lot; I spoke with the judge that judged them and he said it was the German blood causing it; I honestly don't know. But a good buckeye can't be beat!

That brings up a good point. Why aren't judges dq'ing the breeds being shown with knock knees or obvious faults like that? A breeder should also see that in their stock.

Is this being caused by too much inbreeding through the years?

My bucks don't have the issue but, I've seen some at shows that have the issue already. My assumption is small gene pool and bad culling practice?

I'm still learning so Walt and blueface weigh in please.

What is the standard weights for NHs? Are they supposed to be that big 10.5 lbs as a cockerel? Seems big to me. Why are people breeding birds so big? A few posts back; I read a breeder showed a 9.5 lb buckeye cockerel which is 1.5 lbs bigger than they are supposed to be. Should a bird be at least close to the SOP weight to be considered good type?
