The Buckeye Thread

Glad more people are starting to show Buckeyes. There hasn't been much competition out there for the most part for those showing the last couple years. Have fun :)

Not much competition?!?!? The American classes are packed! For any buckeye to make it past best of breed they would have to be phenomenal specimens. What some seem to forget is that the buckeyes aren't the only breeds in the American class. Until all breed the buckeyes to win only a select few will beat out the white and orange birds in that class and show up on champ row.

Where are you getting your info from? There have been quite a few buckeye competitors out there over the last three years. My daughter and I included. I know of at minimum five others that have been showing.

Good luck ApDeb...I hope Mr. Naughty makes you proud. And that you have a good class size to compete against.

Quote: I was introduced to the hamburgs via the "extra' chick in my McMurray order-- I was facinated with him from the beginning. He was a late bloomer compared to my other cckls. but he was a stunning bird. Small , very small compared to the real SSH I saw at a show. SSH are a breed I keep coming back to. WHat fencing will keep them in??

Domestic dogs are the biggest problem for farmers. I"m reworking my fencing also: perimeter of electric fencing. Still thinking about a LGD.

My dogs are death on any other predator that comes by, but neighborhood dogs get a pass, even when chasing chickens. My dogs perceive them as interlopers, but being retrievers, don't have the same protective instincts as real LGDs, or even herding breeds.

The Hamburgs I got from Meyer were small, bantam sized with corresponding bantam crow. I would like to get some LF SSH's because they are stunning looking birds. And they are even more rare than Buckeyes (which makes me wonder why the ALBC doesn't classify them as endangered as they do Buckeyes). There were no LF Hamburgs of any type at the ON this year that I noted. Several bantam SSHs. Last there was only one pair of SSH. Our county fair had a GPH pair, and my daughter's best friend won first place with her SSH bantam pair that her friend's dad had picked up at auction. If I were to guess, they looked like McMurray birds. Very nice markings and no smut in the sickles.

I think they make a very nice, hyper contrast to Buckeyes.

Excellent points; slfarms! The American class is no joke! Anybody can bring a breed to a show; they will automatically get Best of Breed; but to advance past that takes really good birds! Not many breeders can say that! Just because a person can achieve Best of Breed doesn't mean they have what it takes to win the class!

This whole conversation is something; it really is; I know a person that sells buckeyes purely on the fact that they show them......they think that because they show, that makes them "show quality". That is certainly not the case!!! So anybody interested in this breed needs to pay attention and do their own homework to ensure they are getting what they expecting to get.

Buckeyes are a wonderful breed both in exhibition and for their uses as a dual purpose fowl! But not all buckeyes will make good exhibition fowl. This can be said with any breed of poultry!!

I had GP Hamburgs for the first couple of years I had chickens, they were my oldest's pick for showing. They were not friendly, but also not the flightiest birds I have ever had. But, one day when the wind was howling, the temp was around zero, I opened the coop to feed and water and one of those girls came flying out, never hit the ground , flew around the brooder house and up 25' into a Silver Maple about 20-yards away. She stayed there for most of the afternoon too. I figured I would hear her fall out when she became a hensicle, but she came down after a while and went to eat and drink then back to her coop again later in the afternoon. It was then, I discovered the true meaning of 'flighty'.

I love my Buckeyes, for almost all the reasons anyone would like them. They are not the flashiest breed, but they are a solid bird with the kind of beauty you see in something that is simple yet unique. Although my birds are friendly compared to other breeds, I have never had them jump up on my lap or come and want to cuddle. Maybe it is because I don't do that sort of things with my birds. They aren't shy, but they aren't aggressive. I like that well enough. I also like the way they have that same sort of primitive, dinosaur-ish resemblance like Cornish, with the deep brow and wide head and alert eye. It is like their appearance says, "Yeah, I am bad---, and I know it, but I don't have to prove it to anyone."

I don't think you can build a fence tall enough to keep Hamburgs in. Mine were roosting six feet off the ground in a mulberry tree when they were only a month old. They were also the ones I worried the least about because they were so alert and able to fly away from pretty much anything that chased them. Reminded me of pheasants. I made some chicken and noodles this weekend with a SSH cock. Not a lot of meat on him, but had rich dark broth after a night in the crock pot on low and tasted delicious.

I agree great description. lol

I'm trying to sort out what I think of SSH. I need to rethink everying. Trying to get a better handle on the number of birds I have. TO have meaningful breeds. Wonder if SSH will survive predators better--- also looking at white CHantecler.

I have a general prejudice against white chickens. Rocks. Leghorns. Doesn't matter. SSHs were my only exception. I used to call them Dalmatian chickens. I also used to call the Silver Spangled Nutjobs because they were so much crazier than my Buckeyes.
