The Buckeye Thread

Show me where Best of Breed = Champion, and I will support it. Heck, I would have a Champion too then. I took two Bucks to our State Show, got Best of Breed and Reserve of Breed, but I know enough that that doesn't mean my birds are Champions.
I have gotten birds from a so-called 'Champion' line, and they were the worst Buckeyes I have ever laid eyes on. A neighbor and good friend of mine got some from another so-called 'Champion' line, and they were not only the meanest birds she ever had in her many years of raising chickens, but they were underweight and narrow, snakeheaded buggers. All I got to say is BUYER BEWARE. And anyone who can't tell a potential customer the weaknesses of their birds as well as their strengths, then that customer should look elsewhere for a more honest or more knowledgeable breeder to obtain stock from.

I have some in the cooker, but fertility has still be a bit low. We have just gotten out of negative temps up here, and days are finally getting up in the 20s-30s this week. When it is as cold as we have had it the last 3-months, even 15-hours of light haven't made much difference this year. My Bucks double their egg output yesterday, so I am hopeful.

I have 6 chicks in the basement from the last two hatches. This next one should be considerably bigger.

Because of the weather I am not getting home until 6 or after. I have only gotten 3 eggs in the last week that were not frozen and cracked open. With the weather warming up, I hope to get some buckeyes in the bator in the next few weeks. I am ready but mother nature is not.

Have you got more pics of your bantam Buckeyes? I've seen and heard very little of them so far?

Josh gets to learn from the School of Hard Knocks; he'll get the eggs ;). If I'd just give them to him; he wouldn't appreciate them as much.

I'll have to take more pics of the bantams. The chicks are coming really dark; more so than my LF bucks. The reason why you don't see very many of them is because they are pretty rare and the overall quality is very poor; especially with being snake headed and narrow. I was fortunate; I was able to go into an established breeders flock and hand pick what ever I wanted. It would be nice to get these little buggers up front more constantly.

That's true.

It would be nice to see more of the bantams. Hopefully in the show rings as well?
