The Buckeye Thread

NanaKat, it's unfortunate that you don't have the Pumpkin Hulseys any more! You are lucky, you could still get them but it's difficult to get any breed of poultry across the border- I'd be surprised if anyone had them here. It's tough enough locating Buckeyes. I'd have a blast crossing the Pumpkin Hulseys with my Buckeyes, now that would be an interesting mix.
Justso, I always take it personally when I have to buy eggs! I check my nest boxes every morning but the hens haven't even been looking at them. My Buckeyes started getting red in their faces a few weeks ago so I have been hoping.........
I had to look up Arkansas blues- never heard of them, but I found lots of good information and I'll have to catch up on my reading. Sounds like a good poultry program at Arkansas.

I think we were off topic anyway!
Yes, they do exist in bantam size. I'm new to Buckeyes, just this year with a few, standard size. Other more experienced people can probably let you know where you could get some nice bantams.

I would love some suggestions where I could find one. That's part of my problem, I only have room for one, so hatcheries are out of the question. We have 7 bantams and our chickens are pets, not dinner, so we get a little attached to them. We experienced a loss over the summer and my husband kept saying he would like to have a buckeye some day. His birthday is coming up, but I probably won't find one. I'd even settle for a hatching egg.. But we'll see. We lost a sweet little RIR pullet to an internal defect. We have one left and now she's injured and losing weight. Bad bad luck. I think he wants a buckeye because they are similar to RIRs. Anyways... Thanks for the answer to my question!!!

Have a good day!

Duane Urch has bantams, but other than that, I don't know anyone in our part of the country. A few folks have them in Ohio, but they weren't developed the same as the LF Buckeyes were. Still, if you like the look, they are cute little bugger. I doubt you would be able to get just one from Duane unless you were picking it up from him. Maybe he would ship an older bird, but that is pricey, just so you know. The boxes alone are $20, must be express shipped USPS.

Sarah 1226 I hope your little RIR gets better. When you have only a few chickens, and they are all pets, it's very hard when you lose one or one gets sick.

Isn't there a wanted section somewhere on this forum? Maybe you could post there?

Buckeyes with buckeyes!
I brought home a few nuts the other day for comparison with my pullet and Bumble the cockerel who I've decided to keep for now. You can really see how light she is in comparison, but that's OK since she's here as an egg layer only.

Very nice to see the comparison!

Nice, the colour and shine on both nuts and chickens is the same! I absolutely love that Buckeye red.
Although, I 'm not sure if Nettie M. ever said the colour of the buckeye nut- wasn't the breed named after the state, the Buckeye state, and she said the colour should be garnet red, ?
I don't want to start an argument over the colour, I like the buckeye nut red, just trying to find the true historical statement for colour.
