The Buckeye Thread

I have seen that, and I too am going to investigate. They are like hairs, but those are not uncommon, just I don't like seeing them poking out so much longer than their regular feathers.

I thought that was the uniqueness of the breed with the hairs but I am guessing that could be wrong. Kind of like buckeyes chasing and killing mice. I threw a gofer that I caught in with all of my chickens as I was calling them. I am sure they were like, "HERE'S DINNER!", Than out plops a gofer.....Their response was just priceless. If they could flip me off they would have. That thing laid there not moving knowing its last days were near. I picked it up a little over an hour later without a scratch on it and re-homed it.

Stryker that's interesting- but maybe if it had tried to run away they might have gone for it.
I'm always curious too who the person was that had the time machine , who heard the Dinosaur roar that Buckeyes are compared to.

I have two Buckeye cockerels and would like to choose one. Which of the two is best? They are only 19 weeks old but I need to make my decision very soon. I lke the temperament of #1 the best but both are very good, sweet cockerels. Buckeye 1 is more laid back and is better to the hens.
We'll call them Buckeye 1 and Buckeye 2. Buckeye one has more even colour, his head is bigger, and he's shorter and more square than Buckeye 2. His shoulders are so broad he looks narrower in the back than he really is. Most of the time they carry their tails level with their backs.

Hanging out with their Cornish buddies. You can see the size difference, buckeye 1 on the left, 2 on the right, but I beleive buckeye 1 weighs more at this point (I can check).

Or they are over fed. I swear I hear the dinosaur from my welsummer roosters when I do something out of the ordinary around them. Like catch a hen. It kind of freaks me out a tad when they walk up to me or follow me around making that raptor sound. Not in an aggressive way. LOL

Stryker you're not helping

I need to choose one rooster. I have to pick one out from my Cornish roosters too- even 2 roosters are enough! But if both Buckeyes are exceptional ( probably not, based on the laws of chance) maaaayybeee...... Aargh this is hard!

Neither is perfect, so you have to decide which one you prefer to work with. The first one is fluffier, but the second is uneven in his color in that he had the lighter color around his hackle. I think 1 had a better shape to his breast, but is a little shorter in the leg than the other. However, 2 just has a bit flatter breast but more leg. That may fill out more with maturity, as I normally see happen after that age.
So, really, you have a close call to make.
I would keep both, only because when you only keep on, there is sure to be something that happens to the one and then you are out of a rooster. That is just my experience, and Murphy's Law.

Thanks! So Stryker you'd like #1 he's the darkest one. :) Minniechickmama, thanks. I know that when there are only a few to choose from chances are that none of the above is correct! I was wondering about the back length- which rooster is more correct? Number 2 has a much longer back.
