Day old as compared to a 14 day old.

They sure grow fast, don't they! How do you get them to sit still like that? I've got a question, does the nice even colouring of your chick's feathers translate into a nice, evenly coloured adult? The little mottles on the 2 week old chick's feathers are very precise.

They do indeed! I ask them to sit still and they listen ;) I've never noticed a corilation between even feather colors/patterns between chicks and adults.

Blueface when you do that, don't you have to have a whole lot of brooders? Are you brooding each hatch in a separate one? if not, what age of chicks will coexist together? There's such a big difference in size even only a week apart in age.

You do have to have a couple of them. I have 3 brooders and an old hen house converted to a large brooding house. Once they are fully feathered and spring is fully here, they are turned out to free range.
I place chicks or hatches together in 2 week increments. They do fine.

Just got done candling the batch I set a few days ago. I am pretty happy with it. The first batch was about 70%, and this one is about 85% fertile. We are getting warmer and so I imagine I will be getting things really going on now. Time to rotate some roosters too.
I wish I could say the other breeds are doing as well, but it is rarely the case for me. The Buckeyes just like to keep showing everyone else up.

I'm getting everything set up for the season too- I have to build quite a few mobile coop/ tractors. I've decided that outdoors is best for housing. This winter was horrible for high humidity- I'm seeing the value of that pea comb more and more. I'm very surprised there are so few breeds with pea combs.
