The Buckeye Thread

Sexlinks are a hybrid strain of fowl bred particularly for eggs, to my understanding. Cornish and Buckeyes are different, buckeyes only slightly. Nether breed will lay quite as well from what I've observed.
As far the the pelvic width of female vs male.....based on my experience, you can't compare the two....a wide pelvic width on a male only means that he is fat. I breed males that have a longer breast bone.....this prevents males that are short in back and coupled up front. This also prevents males that tend to narrow in width down he body. A buckeye needs to be of equal width from back to tail and many have become to wide up front and narrow to the back. This is a result of breeding overly for a wide chest. This trait inturn is passed to the female offspring and allows for greater egg production. This trait also allows for breast meat capabilities in future generations.
Thanks Blueface then he sounds more promising! I'll see how his breast bone feels. To me he seems a bit short in the back, but he's definitely wide. Maybe he does have a short breast bone then, he's a very round looking chicken. Poor rooster he's been poked and prodded since he was a very young chick.........

Hi everyone!! I am going to be getting some Bucks soon from Minnie! I am super excited and thought I should join this thread and start learning a few things about the breed!!

There has already been 11 cases of AI in Southern Indiana, but it was a different stain. 1 case was of the highly contagious variety and the remaining 10 were of the low variety. A total of 400,000 birds were killed.but seems to have been stopped.

That is what I have read and was verified by our state vet when she called. The High strain was also of American origin, where last year's was Eurasian. It seems like they should be able to figure this all out considering that it has been almost completely a confinement industry issue and very few outside of that have been affected. It is quite possible 'they' know what happened last year but won't be telling the public. If AIDS can be traced back to a monkey in the Congo, what is so difficult about figuring out this AI stuff here? I don't get it.

I have a question for y'all. I was looking at my 4H papers and am trying to figure out what the maximum amount of poultry at a show is for one person. I was planning on a trio or pair of Bucks and a trio of Cream Legbars. Is that to many birds for one person to bring??

I will PM you on this, each state is different and I can fill you in on the MN stuff.

My 9 month old buckeye rooster has an approximately 6 inch long breastbone-how does that compare to your good egg layer strain roosters? I measured from one end to the other.
