The Buckeye Thread

Pics
If I'm not mistaken, I believe the ALBC (American Livestock Breeds Conservancy) is in the midst of performing a census of Buckeyes and their breeders. I'm sure if you were to tag someone over there you'd probably get some hard numbers. Which mag will you be writing for? Love to keep an eye out for stuff like that... keeping abreast of differing points of view, perceptions, opinions and ideas helps me to keep a balanced view of my breed and my breeding goals.

Thanks for the suggestion, I posted the question on their FB site, hopefully someone will answer with some hard numbers on how many Buckeyes there are in the US today. I'd prefer to keep the name of the mag under wraps until they've approved the article for publication.

I finally got a pix of Rockey my five-month old cockeral. He is the one that won Grand Champion for my nine-year old granddaughter this past week. He is so sweet and easy for her to handle - one reason I love the Buckeyes so much. He is gaining a bit on the breast muscle and he has perfect grey barring on his under feathers on his back. The pix doesn't do him justice on the beautiful coloring he has. If anybody has any ideas how I can breed to perfect him, please let me know! His daddy is from an egg I got from a guy that has the line from Laura and his mommy is from the eggs I got from Chris. My pullet CeCe from the same line won Grand Champion Pullet the same day!

Lovely bird! And congrats again to your granddaughter.

Thank you Laura! I will try to get pix of all the ones I think are the best and see if you can help me see what I need to improve in them! I am really excited about trying to get them as good as possible!

Congratulations to your granddaughter! Nice looking cockerel especially for such a young age (good size and thick yellow shanks). He will fill in even more as he matures.

Just thought I'd report that my daughter won Reserve Champion Large Fowl with one of her Buckeye hens at the county fair. It wasn't super competitive, but the Champion was a very nice Leghorn hen that came as a chick from Tony Albritton. It's always fun to have an excuse to talk about them in public. (Alas, no decent pictures this time.)

This is a tough time to show because it always seems the best in the flock are molting...
