The Buckeye Thread

Advantage of pair breeding is that you can watch a specific cross to see what traits they will produce that are usable for the next generation and showing if the cross produces SOP type.

By doing a trio or group breeding you will not not which cross produced the specific traits or show type you are looking for.

I'm single mating this coming year, like you described earlier. The first year that I started with Buckeyes I was just happy to get some chicks in the first season, but I ended up culling most of them. This last year I set up two trio pens (working with the same birds, but paired them up according to their specific traits) and got better results. But I would like to know which single pair produce the best results. I'm going to use the same trios I set up before, but separate each hen in her own pen and rotate the male.

I am also single mating several different pairs. Will also rotate through spring. Its the only way to track who comes from who without trap nesting.

Thanks!

Butchered my two buckeye cockerels today. They were 24 weeks old and dressed out to 3.14 and 4.0 lbs. I have butchered plenty of cornish x in my day and this was so much different. The buckeyes are clean, feathers came out easily and I am really impressed with the size. I could have butchered around 18-20 weeks and I think they would have been about the same size, I just didn't have time until today.

Nice johnnyreb! The carcass's look low fat all meat. You fed them right. This cold winter a good chicken and noodle soup will taste great.

Nice. My cockerels are 18 weeks. Gonna have to get serious about deciding who stays and who goes soon. It is just so dang cold out there. I think they'll get a reprieve for a while since it is to cold to stand out there and evaluate them. I have one that is clearly much larger and has a gorgeous tail coming in. I am hoping he is going to be good on closer eval. The one that bites me is gonna go. Also have a pullet that is much smaller than everyone else - so she'll get culled eventually. The rest are going to be tougher to decide on.
