The Buckeye Thread

We in California will take precipitation in any form. (Fortunately, my tiny corner got enough out of that last storm that I think we'll make it to next season okay, even people with lots of livestock.)

If you use zip ties, how many do you go through on a bird from chick to adult? Do you find removing them to be difficult/dangerous in terms of risk in hurting the bird when you cut them?

Here in Cali a zip tie will last just about forever. I toe punch and zip tie until the bird is on the "keeper" list. You can do several combinations of colors and legs to keep good track of the birds. When adult I use butt end metal bands. They will not fall off.

For whoever asked. wing banding does not affect the showing of a bird. No cuts and no DQ's.

I had 1.5 FEET of rain last weekend.

It helped the drought a bit but I hope it is not on the jet stream heading east. I don't remember this much rain in a couple of days here. Didn't lose any birds, so that is a good thing. It is interesting to see how vertical a chicken will get in the rain. I guess it helps the water run off them faster. I have cover for them, but some just stand in the rain.....although they weren't standing out in that storm. lol

I'm finding it hard to wrap my head around all that water. If we get 1/4 of that we'll have a flood. My chickens are also divided about the weather and storms, the clever ones run for the coop, the rest get soaked. When it's very windy most seem to like being outside, which I find interesting, because I've been told they don't like wind. Mine obviously didn't read that memo.

How does the Buckeyes deal with adverse weather in general? They seem to enjoy snow.

We only got 7" out of that 4-day storm here. Normally that would be enough to rise the creeks alarmingly, but it all went into the ground this time.

I was actually in Humboldt for the show that weekend; they only got about 3". Still, the rivers look better... as in you can no longer walk across a river that is normally 30' deep this time of year.

To stay on topic, we did take a Buckeye hen for the youth show, though not the one we would normally consider our most favorite. 99% of success is showing up, and she did that as the sole Buckeye. (My daughter also has LF Wyandottes.)

It was a fun show to attend and hopefully we'll fill out the American class a bit more next year (with both Wyandottes and Buckeyes).

As far as weather goes, I find I never really worry about the Buckeyes. They do well in hot weather and in wet weather and in cold weather, and always seem fairly cheerful. They're useful birds.

One thing we discovered in this storm is that a couple of inches of rain in, the tarp roof over our main Buckeye keeper pen had lost most of its weatherproofing. It was a muddy mess in there. The hen that went to the show was plucked from the mud, washed, and good as new for the show. I don't think we could have pulled that off with a white cochin.

Practical birds. I like 'em!

I was in Eureka/Ferndale at that show too. It was hardly raining there.

Is any one planning on going to the Chattahoochee in Newnan Ga? I hear tell Bob Gilbert is judging and he's a fervent Buckeye fan and breeder. When I met him, he was super good about answering questions in how to evaluate birds, what he looked for in Buckeyes and was generous enough to give general pointers in breeding principles.

Not I. I stay in the Midwest. We have some very good judges up here that know the birds.

Wow Walt holy rain! I think we are seeing the last of the snow. Storm last week I had 11 inches of snow dumped in our county. A couple more inches coming tomorrow and then a warm up to 50 next week. I can't wait!
