The building of Pea Palace(Pic Heavy)

The real reason why no pressing work is being done on Pea Palace this weekend is because we had an expectant mother German Shepherd.Starting Friday at 6:30pm,she started and at 3:30 this morning was finished,,3 males and 4 females,,all doing GREAT today,,and I'm tired.Since this anticipated litter is now born and doing well,,construction will begin later today.I've considered putting the sheet metal up around the pens along the bottom,,but because the top net is 8' off the ground it may be easier to move the ladders around unobstructed. My one 18x48 large pen I've been debating what sized shelters to build and the best location, ect! My pen perimeter posts are 10 feet apart,,and I don't want these shelters to take up inside pen space,so they need to be constructed along the outside perimeter of the pens.I can divide this area up into 2 large pens,or 4 smaller pens,,but building 4 shelters will take more time and money. Many face the open sides of these shelters to the south,,but we get strong winds here from the south and west,,so I think I want all shelters to be open on the north end which will pose an issue with constructing 1 of them on the south border because of the austrees already growing,,I either cut them off or plan another way to build around them. The mental construction process in my head is working overtime on this one.

Beautiful roses, by the way!!

Thanks, but I can't take credit for those pics, except perhaps for the simple task of finding them via a google search. The name of the rose in bloom in the pics is Baron Girod de l'Ain, in case you wanted to find more info on it. The other roses were not named in the pics I found.

I want to eventually marry my love of gardening with my love of birds into outdoor planted aviaries, and I thought I'd try to share the idea with others.

I struck it rich today!! What do they say,"One mans junk is another mans treasure?" I've been thinking of something to bury all along the outside perimeter to keep other animals out of Pea Palace,,why should they deserve a free meal on one of my treasured Peas? But finding something free to only bury was hard,,I wasn't wanting to "buy" anything that's only going to be buried in the dirt never to be seen or used for anything.I had considered bricks, landscape timbers,,even cattle or hog panels, but the price of all these really adds up after awhile.

I have a friend who made two horse corrals several years ago and used chain link fence stapled on posts Most of this is 4' high,,and there has to be over 200' of it total,,I only need to bury 2' of this,so I will cut this in half,,giving me 400' total or more to bury around the building and outside pen. That should keep digging worthless vermin out of Pea Palace,,so for the next day or so I'm going to take this fence down and get it home.More work, but very necessary for loss prevention.

Okay, here is my first line of defense against terra diggng oppurtunist looking for a Peafowl dinner.I took down about 200' of mostly 4' high chain link fence, some was only 3' high but I cut it all in half so I will have either 18" or 24"of this to bury in a trench right next to the fence and Pea Palace perimeters.I did the same tactic when I built our dog runs except also on those I took a cattle panel and dropped down over the posts to deter top digging to get into the next pen.By the time any animal digs down at least 18" to get to the bottom of this buried fence, plus whatever amount it will need to get it's body under the wire, then dig back up to get inside the pen, will take them several hours,or they will give up when they hit the fence here.Or maybe they will get zapped with the electric wire close to the ground.I can get about another 200' of this old fence to use on next years expansion.

nice i just got a german shep little girl puppy... her ears just went up so cute. post pics of the mom and dad!

jbourget,,all of our adults are "pink papered" as well,,The sire of these pups was SG-55 BSZS rated, both parents fathers was VA-1 twice,,Larus von Batu,,very stout pedigree with over 13 VA-1's in 4 generations.

I have stained all the posts in the pen,and began running cables across the top of the posts for laying and attaching the netting,,I'm going to put the netting up next, then install the sheet metal and welded wire to divide the pens.I think it will be much easier moving ladders around without the inside pens being done.I'm planning on making a trip to eastern Indiana this weekend to get my Midnight B/S male,,and want to have at least 5 pens completed by the weekend.Next week I will get my Purple B/S silver pied male here,,so wrapping this project up is a must.
