The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

Quick question: 5 days ago we had babies born. There are three does living together, all were mated at the same time so I really don’t know who the babies belong to. initially there were 11 kits all in the same corner of the nest, today I only counted 8 living and these were separated into two corners of the nest. Do I have multiple mothers? Why would they start together and then separate?

No experience with colonies but I often find that kits separate and isolate if they get too hot or cold or if they are disturbed often and then they die. I doubt you have multiple moms in the same nest.

Even if they were mated at the same time? I’m curious on this topic in general. I keep mine caged. It’s better for keeping track of everything.

I can ask or even try without asking cuz my parents are like always out🤫 I don't mind cleaning up after and no I haven't seen any poop at all
Aha okay! If you try it you'll have to let me know how it goes.

I know the day has gone by...any poop? Or any changes in behavior, or same? If it were a problem he'd only get worse, so if he's still acting normal it probably is connected to the change in his life, but I'm uncertain if that'd cause it or not. I still would just monitor if he's totally normal besides that.

I see no change in behaviour and pee is everywhere but the litter box he's using as a bed I cleaned some pee from the floor with a tissue and added the tissue in the box

He seems behavior wise fine to me no henching head and body like a ball and no teeth grinding. He is eating and was flopped in the litter box and moving around too ill open him in a bit too and see how long he can hold his pee or poop.

Oh I'm glad you got him! I didn't notice if you mentioned that or not. Do you have any pictures...? :)

No poops are a bit of concern, but if he's acting normal, I'd not be too worried, especially if he's eating grass. No poop can mean either a block or GI stasis, both which can be bad, although I wouldn't jump to conclusions yet, since with a block he'd have a bloated/hard belly and I think with both (I've never dealt with bloat) he'd be a lot more lethargic and not eating anything. It could be he's just trying to get used to his new environment, so I wouldn't be too worried as I said.

What fishychix mentioned is called cecetropes, which is a different kind of a poo in rabbits rather than their normal, hard round balls. It's full of good nutrients and bacteria they need; actually reading about it is quite fascinating if a bit gross. :p But they usually eat cecetropes right as they come out, so you will rarely ever see them. Seeing frequent cecetropes (a few now and again are nothing to worry about) can also indicate the rabbit can have problems, which can range from something wrong inside the rabbit (linked to diet) or also other problems like arthritis, which would lead to them being unable to bend down and eat the cecetropes.

I don't know if you know any of that, sorry if you do! I haven't dealt with bloat before, so I can't mention much for that, but I know GI stasis can actually be easily treated. I'm uncertain what you can get in Pakistan, but if your rabbit ever gets stasis it can be treated with baby's gas drops. I don't have the dosage memorized, but it's easy to look up or you can ask here. And a way to encourage eating and help the problem is to give them either a little canned pumpkin, or one thing is Oxbow's critical care, which I highly recommend, but again, I don't know if you are able to get that.

Sorry for the long post, lol, but I'm not saying your rabbit has stasis or anything, I just thought I'd mention those things! Hopefully he'll start pooping soon. Does your new bun have a name? :)
Yes he has a name he's bugs. I named him after bugs the bunny cuz he always reminds of that cartoon. Lol!

Does too much fibre result in cecetrope poop? I feed him boiled corn very small amount, fresh grass from the garden it looks like timothy hay and I'm changing his diet so very little veggies and treats like apples. If that's too much fibre or too less let me know I think it's a appropriate amount of fibre 🤷‍♂️
