The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

The Former Hurricane Sally was headed my way and heavy rain bands were supposed to hit here tonight and there was going to be 2 straight hours of heavy rains so I downed a bunch of energy drinks (not recommended because they are not healthy) to make sure I was awake to handle any problems with the rabbit pens being flooded and after I downed 3 of them the forecast changed from heavy rain to light rain, now its just cloudy. Too late though because I can't sleep. But we will have rain all day today that I need to be awake but chances are I am going to pass out and sleep heavy when the energy drinks wear off. Kinda bored so I posted here. At sunset I was frantically running around putting up extra splash guards because we were going to get a slight 12 MPH breeze with the rain. Its not much but its enough to cause places to get damp that I prefer to stay dry. Its cooled off so I do not need to worry about rabbits over heating by covering them up a bit. All that for nothing! oh well, I am just glad that I might not get flooded at 4 am... Not out of the woods though, rain all day long might cause a few problems. Stupid Hurricanes... I guess I should be glad that I live so far inland that Hurricanes do not bring storm surges and high winds... but they do bring too much rain some years.
Well, that sucks! But You know if you hadn’t prepped you’d be in trouble, whatever solace that gives you :) I hope you sleep well, whenever they wear off.

I slept for a few hours but got out of bed the moment my alarm clock went off because we may get that heavy rain late afternoon and I need to be awake.

Bugs is alot more confident now. He even let me pick him up today and he didn't even wiggle abit. He let's me touch him when we are outside now and follows me around and I've taught him to come when called he only comes cuz he knows he's gonna get a treat for this. He also pees in the litter box now I do find droppings in the cage but i don't mind I just pick them up and toss them into the garden. Today he even let me comb him. He hates the comb.

I am new to raising rabbits and had a question😊 I am getting this pretty NZ doe next weekend and I was curious as to what her color is called? Thanks in advance for your help.

I do not know the official name of the color but I love those natural colors, I am going to see if I am capable of looking it up because I want to know the official name of that color.

How old is this rabbit? Is she a pet or a breeder?

This would be a chestnut. http://taprabbitry.blogspot.com/2016/07/new-zealand-rabbit-genetics-its-in-genes.html Chestnut is not showable in NZ, and it's often a sign of mixed heritage or crossing color lines. It's a dominant color so it can be hard to breed out. Hope you're getting her at a good price. :)

FYI, this is the same coat genetically as a castor but it looks different because so much of the color for this coat is defined by the guard hairs. Rex rabbits don't have any guard hairs and so express the AA wild type agouti much more smoothly.

I had a feeling it was Castor but since I have only dealt with that color on Rex Rabbits and Rex Rabbits having a totally different fur I didn't want to pop off at the mouth and say it. Thanks for sounding off on that because I was wondering. I really like the natural colors in rabbits.

She is a year old and a proven mama. She will be a breeder and we are raising for meat and possibly pet if there is interest. I am paying $40 for her...is that a fair price?

For a proven meat doe that's not bad as long as she's been a good mom. She's just got really bad form, so if you were looking at showing or breeding to a standard/selling to 4Hers, etc. I'd try to get better starting stock. But for a meat rabbit and the price that's fine.
