The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

Um now I need to introduce Bugs to my dog since stray cats found a way up on the terrace. My dog Shadow is very hyper he is a labrador and he loves to chase things. He has killed a peacock chick before. The chick was of the size of a chicken. For that my dad got really angry and he hit him and after that I just let my peacocks out and he didn't even go near them. Ik hitting is not a good way to teach a dog. He also has caught and killed a huge rat before. Is there any way to introduce them at all? He loses interest quickly but he barks at stuff which can put Bugs in shock.

Wear him out really well first. Make him do a few tricks, take a walk, play fetch, anything to make him tired.

Then, put Shadow on a leash with Bugs on another side of a gate or something so they can see amd smell each other. If Shadow does good reward with a treat. If he barks say 'no', walk away amd come back. If he lacts aggressive or too interested in Bugs say 'leave it'.

If he doesn't know leave it already, or isn't the best at it you can get a peice of food that he would like, put it on the ground and keep your foot close so you can keep him from eating it. When he tries to get the treat say 'leave it' and put your foot over it. Saying this should get his attention. If he looks at you and leaves it quickly reward with a treat. Do this a couple times a day if needed.

Let them see each other through a fence or gate a few times a day. If it goes well, have someone sot with Bugs so they can keep him safe just in case, while you have Shadow on a leash. Let Bugs come up to him. If Shadow acts like he wants to chase him say leave it. If he does good tewatd with high value treats. Do this often until you can trust them together more. Always supervise them together until you are 100% certain that they are fine together.

Good luck!

I see everythingducks gave you some great advice, but I just wanted to add I wouldn't be too worried about the barking shocking Bugs. Rabbits can get used to loud, scary noises quickly, especially if you give them a chance to naturally react and get used to whatever the loud noise it is. (by letting them run away and hide) My rabbits don't even blink at power tools outside anymore, even with the mower going a few feet away from their hutch. But when they were scared, they could go run and hide in the barn. (wooden covered part of their hutch)

The funny thing about rabbits is, is that they are physically delicate and also are prey animals, but at the same time are very hardy and tough. I see people act like they are fragile little things, but they really aren't. Let them naturally get used to things and they will do just fine.

It may be useful to let Bugs listen and get used to your dog's barking first, so it's one less frightening factor when you begin to introduce them. (Unless he already is used to it) As everythingducks said, it's best to keep them separated by a gate neither one can get through first. I don't own a dog but common sense tells me to wait until both are comfortable with each other before actually introducing them. ;) I hope you have success!

Does anyone here know causes for a watery eye? Sorry for the long post lol...

I've posted about this before, I think, but I wanted to ask some questions again. My lionhead rabbit, around 11yo, has had some red/watery eye issues before. I've always linked it to weather--changes in weather, very hot weather (I live in FL so that's a problem here), or perhaps dryness in the air and maybe dust; from hay or maybe dirt (although our backyard is pretty sheltered so I doubt that).

However, today I have now cause for more questioning...his left eye (always the one that gets watery--the right not so much if at all) is pretty watery again, like, enough to dab away with a paper towel. The tears are a little cloudy, too. This is abnormal for his redness/wateryness I'm used to. Anyone know why this might be? (I can't rely on google -- I've done extensive research on this and they always want to give me the doom and gloom side of things )

The weather is actually very nice today--warm, but the mornings have been cooler because of rain but we have a nice breeze. Also, it's wet so no chances of dust, and the weather has been like this for the past week or so so no sudden changes in weather. I'm gonna watch him for sure...hopefully it'll just clear up on its own...he hasn't had any kind of bad watery eyes in a while. They've been a bit red, but this is kind of odd.

My one other question is, does anyone know if there are any drops or something to help clear this up? I honestly don't even know if its bothering him or not, since he acts normal and doesn't seem bothered or in discomfort.

I've attached some pictures of his watery eye. It's 'filled up' like this much twice. Wasn't like this earlier this morning..
