The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

No storms. As for her tummy, I will check if I can get close enough to her. It all depends on the day whether she wants to be pet or not.

If you think she’s pregnant, that’s an automatic no. I have not bred her ever.
No I don't think she's pregnant.

I have dealt with quite a few rabbits who are in pain, they don't always sit in a corner grinding their teeth. I once found a rabbit who had died with his teeth clenched to his cage. He had no symptoms before but I found him that way the next day😔

It's the time of year when most rabbits are molting, and they lick lots of hair off. If she got enough of it into her system she could get clogged up. GI stasis is painful, most rabbits will scream or act like they're tormented.

Hi everyone!

Perhaps one of you here can help me. I seem to have a small issue with Sophie, my rabbit.

Some details, she is a Netherland dwarf / Californian mix. She is about eight years old. Not spayed.

I was getting ready to go elk hunting today, I woke up at 6:00 and went out. While I was waiting for my ride, I checked on Sophie. She was constantly gnawing and clawing at the wire fence. I thought she needed something, so I gave her fresh water, because her water was frozen. I also gave her food. Even after giving her what she needed, she was still clawing and gnawing at the fence.

It’s almost as if she was trying to get out of the run, I don’t know why.

My only idea so far is that she needs more interaction and something new in her life. She’s been in that run since we moved into the new house six months ago.

Any ideas on what is going on and why she’s doing this weird behavior?

Any advice will be appreciated,

Jared
That sounds like a bored bunny. Whenever my bunny does that she is normally bored and needs something to do so i sprinkle some pellets in and around little toys for her.

Well, that answers my question. I think she’s bored. Maybe I should get her some toys.
I agree she's probably bored. It does seem like weird behavior, never really heard of a rabbit doing that, but if she only has a few toys or nothing to chew/play with that's probably the issue. It's common for rabbits to do lots of chewing on stuff when they're bored, too, apparently. Gnawing on cage bars is similar I suppose.

There are lots of different woods that are safe for rabbits, I know apple tree branches, rose stems and leaves (just be careful of thorns), willow I believe, and others are safe for rabbits. Letting them chew keeps their teeth filed down and gives them something to do. Cardboard is great too. Stuffing hay in paper towel or toilet paper rolls is a good toy and easy to get and make as well.

While I'm not saying it couldn't be a sign of pain, I highly doubt this behavior is. Rabbits typically show lethargy, or just hide their illnesses/pain really well. That, or specific symptoms for specific problems. (head tilt, runny eyes/nose, etc) And rabbits with stasis will definitely show lethargy and just shut down if it's bad enough. I lost my girl Pumpkin to stasis this year and that's exactly how it went.

Hopefully boredom is the only thing your Sophie has got though. :)

Took pics of my bunny yesterday... She really doesn't act like she's 9years old🤦‍♀️🤣

Hi all. It has been a while since I’ve been in this thread. I hope all your buns are happy and healthy.

I’m converting a side yard to a bunny yard. We have two coops out there that aren’t being used and I’ve come up with some ideas for the areas I’m concerned they’ll dig. It’s a good sized space for them, 20’ X 20’. We’re beginning work on it today! We will still have an indoor pen for the summer as it gets way too hot to leave them out there.

I found this idea for a DIY cooling pad using ceramic tile and cement blocks. I’m hoping they’ll help extend the amount of time the buns can stay outside.

We have much to accomplish and I ordered some materials we’ll need, but this is the space I’m converting. The ground is really hard in most areas and the tree roots should help prevent digging…I hope.
