The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

I use Southern States Chick medicated chick feed because my feed Mill doesn't have a Medicated chick feed. But I get everything else from a local feed mill direct and its so inexpensive and all my chickens have been healthy since.

With Dumor I had chicks that got sick and died, some might survive but were stunted and less than half of chicks I raised during that year lived to egg laying age. Then I switched to Southern States and later a local feed mill and no more problems.

Since its a Rabbit thread I will mention Rabbit Feed at my Feed Mill... 50 pound bag of 16% protein is $10.00, 18% is $10.50.

I fixed the leaks on the Rabbit pen. I knew these leaks would happen but minimal leaks wouldn't be a bad thing provided 2 areas remained consntantly dry. Leaks affected the feeding area and the nesting area so I had to put in plastic feed bags. I do want to say that I highly recommend NOT using that brand name, about the only good thing about it is that feed bags are useful but I had a lot of chickens die the year I used that brand. I found cheaper and more healthy chicken feed since.
If the groves on the roof were going in the other direction I would have had a waterproof seal against the shed (thats how I did it when it was a chicken coop there) but I wanted water to run off in a correct direction (down) so I reversed it and that means leaks up against the shed which I fixed with plastic feed bags. I have a few other areas of concern to check out next time it rains but this may possibly be the last fix. Its also a dangerous fix because if I put my weight on roofing material anywhere that did not have support underneath I could have fell through a roof with jagged metal cutting into me. too bad I have to replace these bags every year or 2 depending on how much sun they get. I could have bought something designed for the task but I am too cheap and wanted to recycle old feed bags.

I've never fed that brand but I do use the chick grit. Mostly because it's all I can find that's little enough.

How is everyone and their bunnies? :)

Today I finally groomed Lion, my lionhead, in a while. He's been shedding and I was a bit lazy on getting on top of it... and little did I realize he was shedding out his whole coat. :th

But, on the fun side, I managed to make a rabbit out of his fur, lol! I also attached a picture of Lion since I don't think I've shown him here yet.

That's a LOT of fur. I had about that much from HopTart earlier this year. Lion is a handsome guy!

For those of you who sell baby bunnies, have you noticed when the best time to sell is? I’m thinking obviously Easter, but I wanted to get a litter out this year. Is Christmas a good bunny holiday?

Depends - are you trying to breed ethically?

Real talk. I *never* sell in late December or at Easter. Rabbits are the third most abandoned pet in the united states. Also because when I worked at a pet store we'd sell out every late December and have a LOT of animal returns (many abandoned without a refund because they were just work) in early January. They'd just leave them in the store and walk out. We'd get a lot of people saying they took their animals home and wanted a refund because they died within a month when they died due to neglect. Many people would come in and just SCREAM at employees about how their rabbit didn't fit in the tiny cage they bought for them any more because they were 8 week old baby rabbits when they bought them. Honestly I don't sell much to pet homes because I've seen too much awful. Not to be discouraging - it's just reality.

But if you just wanna make a buck/move some rabbits I suppose there's a good number of sales to be had during that time frame. The pet store certainly sold a lot.

The biggest time I find for rabbits personally is 4H season. Which means late April early May - people are buying rabbits for meat pens, breeders for meat pens, and pet rabbits for the kids in town who can't keep meat animals.

(I also see you're in NEOH - that means all this was happening in your area-ish. :T Since that's where I live too...)
