OMG SHE'S ADORABLE!!!!Look what I’m getting on Sunday. My friend wants me to hatch duck eggs again and this is my payment for doing it.
She’s dirty because he was letting her hop around his yard. I named her Snow after Snow White

He was telling me that she’s dirty because she was going crazy in his yard. She is 8 weeks old.OMG SHE'S ADORABLE!!!!
Can I have her?![]()
I definitely care more about the ethics than the bucks. We just had bad job changes and was thinking this could help alleviate the tight budget during that time. It’s good to know you worked at a pet shop. I really don’t know why or how I totally overlooked the points you made. It baffles the mind what people don’t care about. Thank you for the 4H reminder! I know those will be taken care of, at least until they’re sold to other 4Her’s after the fair.Depends - are you trying to breed ethically?
Real talk. I *never* sell in late December or at Easter. Rabbits are the third most abandoned pet in the united states. Also because when I worked at a pet store we'd sell out every late December and have a LOT of animal returns (many abandoned without a refund because they were just work) in early January. They'd just leave them in the store and walk out. We'd get a lot of people saying they took their animals home and wanted a refund because they died within a month when they died due to neglect. Many people would come in and just SCREAM at employees about how their rabbit didn't fit in the tiny cage they bought for them any more because they were 8 week old baby rabbits when they bought them. Honestly I don't sell much to pet homes because I've seen too much awful. Not to be discouraging - it's just reality.
But if you just wanna make a buck/move some rabbits I suppose there's a good number of sales to be had during that time frame. The pet store certainly sold a lot.
The biggest time I find for rabbits personally is 4H season. Which means late April early May - people are buying rabbits for meat pens, breeders for meat pens, and pet rabbits for the kids in town who can't keep meat animals.
(I also see you're in NEOH - that means all this was happening in your area-ish. :T Since that's where I live too...)
Be sure to sell them at a high price, otherwise they'll be fed to snakes. If you want to sell them as pets I would be sure that the people buying them aren't just going to give them to a young child that won't care for them. I would definitely ask lots of questions to be sure they have everthing ready and know how to properly house and care for them.I definitely care more about the ethics than the bucks. If I were selling them I would be super picky and they would have to have a resume with all their knowledge and things showing they know how to care for them and spill them lol.
Thank you for selling to reptile people! I’m someone who has reptiles and I want to get a monitor and I’ll have to give it culls. I see no problem with it because I cremate them so I wouldn’t waste them even though the earth uses the ashes.I feel that whole needing to pay the bills thing. That's how I feel about 4H kids too - usually the 4H leaders will find SOMEWHERE for the rabbits to go when they're done. If you plan on selling during holidays (or honestly pets regularly) craft a very careful return policy. Mine is that anyone can return for no refund any time, or a replacement (or full refund if a replacement is not available) only in the first week.
Asking questions is good. I try not to be too nosey but I always ask people things like "what do you want a rabbit for, what's your housing plans, if this is "for" a kid do you realize you are responsible for the care of the 5-12 years of the rabbits life not the kid" etc. I make sure I'm available to answer questions any time to any customer. I give them my real email and make sure they know they can contact me with any questions any time. It's good to think about what questions to ask when while remembering - someone who really wants a rabbit will find a way to get one even if they don't finish your interview. I'd rather them buy from someone willing to answer lots of questions and be frank than someone who just ignores their customers like a pet shop.
As for snakes.... Snakes need to eat too. We absolutely sell to people with snakes here. IMO it's a perfectly reasonable end for a cull rabbit and certainly no worse than those of us who eat them ourselves. Some people feed them to dogs too. But these animals have to eat and snakes are great.
(I guess I'd just always rather see a rabbit or any animal go towards feeding another living thing than living somewhere they're neglected or abused.)
I agree, snakes need food too. I just meant if you wanted to sell them as pets you would want to be careful that they were to be well taken care of.I feel that whole needing to pay the bills thing. Did you feed them with the beaks and everything on?D and I have both owned a number of snakes over the years and loved them. Some snakes won't even eat F/T. His snake, Jello, was a rescue that burned his nose on a heat rock and couldn't hunt with smell or heat. So he needed to eat live/moving prey and he was a 6' redtail boa constrictor. Runt rabbits and cull chicks (cockerels and crossbeaks especially) were perfect for him.
